A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine was given a Rogers 2 4 2 in a box in bits, together with a little track and a couple of cars, think a relation passed on to him,(HE A 00 MAN) :(anyway this wreck was brought round to me to see if i could do anything with it?OH DEAR,,,was my reaction when the box was opened, total mess, screws, bits of all shapes and sizes loose in the bottom,i have posted a pic of the cab here to show general condition,BAD!!!Only thing to do was to see if it ran,the chassis was at least in one piece and to my total suprise it did,,,and the lights worked, but no smoke unit.Leave it with me and i"ll see what i can do with it?After going through all the bits, taking the kinks out of bent pipework, sorting where certain screws went etc i decided all it really needed new was a cab and a bunker added,I made the cab side sheets square for looks and made the bunker roughly the same size as an Otto with some dummy coal, all the stock handrails reused,I also dumped the capping on the stack, giving a cleaner look,by the colour of the inside of the tank I think it started life as a Great Northern, dark green,it had already been painted over but should be able to salvage the rest,so work started and here is the result,as it is"nt mine not much detail was added(rivets etc)just kept it plain and simple :)finished off with a coat of humbrol satin black and the engineer is only a borrow :)The rear coupling will come from the tender, which he does"nt want, says i can have that, think i may make a snow plow from that duno yet,as for a reaction to the finished loco,,,,,,,,his wife wants a railway in the garden now, they got more track this week, plan to start railway in new year,at least a loco to start them off!another convert to the hobby ,AT LEAST GOING OUTSIDE NOW!!!! ;D ;D

Re: Helping a friend out,,Rogers 2 4 0

You've done an excellent job there - I was hoping your story would end with your mate saying "You can keep it" - but good to get another convert! :D

I have been given a box of "Treasure" from a G scaler who turned to the dark side of the force (On30) and a Rogers with bits is in there somewhere.

It has an LGB motor block with it that I was going to use for another project.

Were these made by LGB?

I now some inspiration to fix it up.

The Rogers 2-4-2 is an Aristocraft model (and REA before that).

I've got one of the old REA 2-4-2T versions. I quite like it actually, it's got some grunt to it although it tends to waddle around a bit due to the suspension in the mechanism.

Thanks all,he was given the box at a later date with some other bits in,it is an old REA(Great Northern) model and as your posts have said it pulls well, needs traction tyres(maybe)but the main thing is its a loco that is now usable again ;)together with a few freight cars that needed some TLC,axles missing etc now sorted ; and as its christmas i have leant him a Big Hauler and a couple of cars, really getting the bug as he running a loop on his garage floor untill the better weather arrives and work starts in ernest outside ;D

...,needs traction tyres(maybe)...

Aristocraft part #29404.

Looks like GRS have some:

Thanks for the info, will pass on ;)

That looks really good, like some archaic survivor from times past ???

Fantastic. And now if we can get some pics of her in action .... ???

They are so full of character - I call mine Galloping Gertie (it does seem to waddle a bit!).

I've always been a fan of these. I love the bunker! I added a larger full bunker to the back of mine. I sold it to a friend and he photographed it one winter on his layout and won the photo contest on MLS before the site changed hands. I'm pretty sure that pic is still on the sites homepage photos.

From my experience the Rogers traction tyre will disintegrate simply sitting on the shelf. An LGB Stainz tyre (37mm from memory) suitably trimmed down to reduce its width will fit the Rogers wheel and give almost lifetime service.

Thanks Nick and Tim for the info on the traction tyres,i may have a couple of the stainz type in my parts box, will have to look,if not we know who has some to order,ta agen ;DI looked on the MLS site Vic,if its the same pic she looks a little snowbound and a smart little loco ;D,,,,,One other question, the loco didnt have a smoke unit and my matey asked if he could still get one,so i said i would ask, someone will know out there!!!!Its an old REA model, think the unit is a brass type tube with a jack type connection and from memory while i was taking it apart it has what appears to be a small metal pipe to about the top of the boiler inside the base of the stack,i assume some sort of "puff pipe" is it now an Aristo part?and of course can we still get one for that model? Thanks ,,,Rio. ;D ;D ;D

The Aristo loco had a clear plastic tube attached to one cylinder that is somehow connected to the smokestack/chimney. This gives a 'synched' chuff when in operation. Spares may still be available or perhaps look at the Seuthe smoke units as used on LGB locomotives. The early LGB units were 18 volt so no need for voltage reduction. I would adapt an LGB smoker rather than try to source REA/Aristo parts.

Not forgetting that you may be able to source a suitable unit cheaper than LGB, by searching for Seuthe or Graupner. IIRC, Cornwall Model Boats is a supplier of Graupner units - folk on here have used them in the past.

According to Bachmann UK, the Rogers smoke stack is Aristocraft part A29302, still in stock.

Thanks guys,I have a 18v LGB spare unit,i will check if it fits in the stack,if it does he can buy one!,,,,can he have my spare one?NO!!! ;D,,,,,as for Cornwall Model Boats i have used them in the past for my R/C boats, great idea, completely forgot about them, thanks for reminder, but will check LGB unit first. :)
