DSC_1325.JPG DSC_1326.JPG I've been reading the Thomas the tank engine books to my Gandkids (the Rev Awdry ones) and they have all taken a liking to Toby so the boys have asked if its possible to make one for our track. Well that was a challenge I couldn't resist so here are a couple of pictures to whet your appetite

Presumably as the parts were a 3D Printer job, you will give us a little more detail on your super job.

Yes more to come over the next couple of weeks as I get it finished the video gives a fair idea of the design parts that have gone into building it and I had help from a 6 and 4 year old when I was drawing the design checking to make sure i had done it right. The face will be a challenge as I will need to use a new digital clay modeling program, I will also make some Troublesome trucks to go with Toby and Henrietta.

That is really looking jolly good - MUCH nicer than the "solid-windowed" Bachmann TTTE one...... :)

Would also be interested to know rough costs of printing consumables. At least it will be a Battery Powered beast - top marks for that!

Nice work!

Did you 3D print the buffers and the buckeye type couplings as well?

If so, are they reliable and robust enough in normal use....

Gizzy the couplers are Kaydee type which I have adopted across the railway the buffers are 3D printed, they seem to stand up to wear and tear ok trick is to glue them in with a gum based glue so if you do break one simply pull it out and replace it mind I haven't had to replace one yet

Up Studio, the software which drives the UP printer which Alan uses, contains software which claims to convert 2D images to 3D. On the face of it (excuse the pun) that would be ideal for converting a Toby face to a 3D print. Has anyone used this facility? Does it work as claimed?

A quick update on Toby and his train, construction has ground to a halt at the moment as I wait for electronics and construction materials to be delivered, should be able to get back to it early next week.

The flowers are a nice addition. Hope they survive the forty one degrees this weekend!

Hi, just admiring your 3D printed tram. What will you use for a motor block. I use Playmobil RC for most 4 wheelers or when the wheels can't be seen.
