I have done a bit of timber graining in full size practise with a rubber graining tool but I'm trying to get white styrene to look like varnished timber. So far I have only experimented with painting a bit of styrene with a red/brown paint then with a dry stiff small brush removing some of the paint so the white can be seen underneath in sort of a timber grain effect. Results look exactly that but maybe guilty knowledge? I'll try with a pale brown under coat and a dark brown topcoat and see if that looks better. If it all goes pear shaped I'll just paint the windows but the prototype is all brass and varnish....

Yes - an undercoat of the desired background colour works better - I used white u'coat before applying a stain varnish because I wanted a lighter 'wood' finish.

A few years back I tried it full size on a piece of furniture and the results were not bad. I bought a kit which included a 'graining tool' comme ca:

This video shows the sort of effect. Not tried it in miniature but I'm sure a similar approach could be used if you could make a miniature version of the tool

Exactly like my graining tools, mine came as a set at a Home reno show in 3 sizes 25mm, 80mm and 150mm...
Actually I got quite impressive results, so far in G scale I'm less than inspired, but I'll press on...
I'll speak to Hyacinth, she may buy me a 3D scanner and printer and I could make them in any size......
