Claptowte Railway - I.P.Black Storage Bins

I.P.Black, Coal Merchant of Gernise End on the Claptowte Railway was in need of some extra storage bins to supplement the coal staithes. I set about building some with steel verticals with reinforced concrete slabs slotted in horizontally, or in the real world, 4.8mm square tube with 4.8mm plastic channel, the slabs being 3mm plasticard. The base, as with the coal staithes, is 3mm plywood.



The concrete slabs have seen better days with some cracking, to the extent that in some places the reinforcing bars are exposed. One bay will be used for split logs, one for sacks ready for delivery and one for the storage of Calor Gas bottles.

The finished storage bins, stocked up and ready to go. The first bin is for the storage of Calor Gas bottles. The centre bin is a holding store for filled sacks of coal and logs. The end bin is for split logs.

The centre bin is used as a holding store for filled sacks, ready for delivery. The coal sacks are resin castings manufactured by Modeltown. These sacks were also used for the Claptowte Railway Coal Staithes and the load for the 1941 Plymouth Pick-up truck. As with the pick-up truck, two of the tops of the coal sacks were drilled and scraped out to provide space to add a filling of split logs. The sack trolley is also identical to the one displayed in the coal staithes. They are a 3D printed item from SLR. They were printed to 16mm scale which made them slightly tall for G Scale, so I reduced the height of the handles.

The pile of empty coal sacks was scratch built. I had an old sheet in the garage which I used as a dust sheet. The doubled over and stitched hem at one end was exactly the right width for an empty coal sack. I cut off and trimmed a length of this hem which I then cut to suitable lengths. I soaked the pieces with a solution of white PVA glue in order to stiffen them. When they were almost dry they were folded over and glued together into a pile. When this was completely dry they were spray primed and painted to match the resin coal sacks.



The last bin is used for split logs. The logs are sawn and split from offcut branch of Acer in the garden, 1/24 scale white metal axe from S&D Models. ..

Having posted pics of the finished model yesterday, I woke up in the middle of the night and realised that I had not planted any tufts of grass, around the bins, to add to the general air of decay. I got up this morning, planted some grass and re-photographed the model. I have edited the previous post to substitute the new pics. I apologise to Forum members who had previously posted LIKES, I hope you still like the new photographs, in fact I hope you like them a bit more. Many thanks.

The Coal Office and I.P.Black's storage bays have some fresh air in the garden, 18.4.2021. Since the bays were last photographed, I have added some more Calorgas cylinders.
