Buildings

Hi, just joined G society and ordered a starter
LGB railway. Everyone I've spoken to has said start small, what I would like to do is add a few buildings, station? But put off by the cost of buying a ready made building. Are there any reasonable priced kits out there that are not too expensive? And not too difficult!! Cheers.

Hi Grumpee,
The buildings by Piko and Pola are fantastic but a bit on the dear side. Have a look at Top Slots and Trains web site, he discounts all the buildings and it will give you an idea of what's around. If you do order from Darren be aware that he's on his hols from Sunday for 2 weeks.

Garden Railway Specialists in Princes Risborough have a number of resin kits that are good for outside. Not pennies cheap, but otherwise good value.

I know Pola and Piko buildings are very expensive. However, they last forever outdoors. In my twenty-five years of having a garden railway, I have experimented with making my own buildings. None have stood the test of time. Now I am a master carpenter, so I know a bit about building things. My Pola structures are still going strong. The oldest is over twenty years old and has been outside continuously.

Seen what looks like a good place to start buildings.http://www.jacksonsminiatures.com

something to think about? Cheers.

Why not try HIPS Plastic, held together with Pipe Weld and Pins can survive outside very well. But have to say best in the shade.silo and Factory on the left are made from this. Building to front right is from Wood covered in Silo Sand and Painted external Paint Grey.

Cheep Playmobil or other Kids buildings sourced cheeply from Boots Sales or Garage Sales can be converted to all sorts of things. This I think Regency House has made two Station Buildings and a Hotel.

This Wooden Box coated with Corrugations from Baked Bean Tins has been outside for over 6 Years now and is surviving very well. The Tinplate is going a bit Rusty, but that is what I wanted.

This buiding made from Decking, Lolly Sticks and HIPS has been outside over 10 Years now and was built for my friends line and came back to me when he died 3 Years ago.image.jpeg
Another cheep Toy, would benefit from a Repaint but I like something bright to interest the kids.

On the left a £1 Bird House, had suffered the ravages of Time probably 12 or more Years now. But the Lead Flashhing Roof scribed for Slates has saved its bacon. To the right a very crude shelter made from 1 x 1.5 inch timber and at least 20 Years old. From a friends line when he got out of Garden Railways for a while.

The Water Tower made from Cement Bits off cleaned up Bricks, glued with a cheep external glue and filled with Concrete when dry. Middle an upturned Flower Pot and on top a cheep Garden Ornament Roof. Door Plasticard and Frame Rocket Sticks. Over 10 Years old now. Misc Pottery Buildings, Grey one an old Tom Cooper one not available any more getting on for 20 Years old.

Lead flashing covered with Gafa Tape makes great roofs and is used on a few of my Outside Buildings.

There are many cheep options out there, just a bit of imagination is all you need.

Thanks Jon, I can see I have a lot to learn!!

Good link Ian! A different approach to that I took but probably more durable.

They look absolutely excellent. I think they are resin cast. You have to paint them yourself. I have to say I'm sorely tempted, it's that 'painting' bit that holds me back.

Have you been talking to that Irish bloke again Jon, Phil O'Sofical? :giggle::giggle:

Model Town buildings are resin and easy enough to paint. Also their customer service is really good. The same can be said for Pendle Valley Models who also do some of the less 'usual' stuff.
No connection to either of these business's other than as a satisfied customer.
