????? Dave's first post shows the basic model, no mesh on the steps, and in his description he mentions adding it..... maybe whoever owned the one on the layout had done the same to his....?

Sorry for the delay in replying, I have been away and unable to post.
I can confirm that the steps are smooth plastic when it comes out of the box. I use aluminium mesh from Halfords, it is in the car body repair section.
Cut it to shape, then use a thin superglue to stick it to the plastic step. hey presto you now have detail where there was one nothing but smooth plastic.
