While it isn't really his "fault" I'm blaming Jason for resurrecting this project anyway. You see, Jason decided he wanted to build one, but couldn't find my photo/data sources....

3 YEARS of "seasoning" in a box? Oooookay, then. Anyway....

The first order of the day was to re-work the center part of the frame. For whatever reason, the guy who started this notched the frame about halfway where it passed under the firebox. Making it straight will (hopefully) give me just enough room to build a "working" engine.

My crankshaft is two MPC General tender wheels with the flanges shaved off, a shortened axle and bits of Delton C-16 rods for pillow blocks

I mounted it on the frame with enough room to build the rest of the engine.

Yes, it's just a wee bit out of scale, but it's what I had.

I also cut back the firebox about 5/8" because it looked too long. I'm really, really looking forward to drilling new holes for the HO track pin "rivets" (NOT!!)

For those who never heard of such a beast, or might want to build along with Jason here's a bit of source material:

That looks like an amazing beast. In the cold light of day it's a traction engine adapted for snowy conditions with a large water tank capacity. But still one heck of a beast. I love it. I can see a demand for 2nd hand Bachmann Porters developing very shortly. Great project, I can't wait to see the finished article. Thanks for putting all the information up here. Are you going to R/C it and have it trundling round the garden ? A nice companion for the lumber yard "straddler" that Ross provided information on here not so long ago.
Max.

Oh sure.. go ahead and blame the innocent!

Well, so much for buying the parts off you Mik. I actually started looking at the local shop for parts... they have a ton of (model) construction equipment, including an antique tracked... thing, kinda looks like a small vintage bulldozer minus the dozer part.

This project is gonna hold out till I get the map done for the narrow gauge system that I "assembled" in the history of my own railroad. Since I normally concentrate on standard gauge, NG stuff isn't normally my interest. However, ever since developing the idea for a narrow gauge 2-8-0+0-8-2, I've thought about building one narrow gauge trainset. Was planning on just a coal train, but I'm thinking now that a nice-sized mixed freight with a flat car and one of these as a load could be kinda cool.
