The Skonkworks is back! a NKP critter

Mik

Steam tractors, good books, scratchbuilding models
NOT Nickle Plate Road, but rather No Known Prototype.

I needed a set of cylinders for the Lombard project, so I bought a 1st generation B'mann Porter off a used train dealer for $15

So now I had a (wimpy) chassis just sittin' around doing nuthin'. A bit of digging in my scrapbox turned up a HLW mack hood that Vic had sent me a while back.

The motor box hanging off one end limited things a lot. I carved part of it away with a Dremel to make the Mack hood fit. but there's still a HUGE amount of overhang - about 3/4" (3 scale feet) more than I really want, but there's not a whole lot I can do about it.

To get the cab back closer to where it needed to me I had to add a plastic box to the front wall. We'll say it's the fuel tank, or maybe it's a hydraulic oil tank?

The chassis with the cab floor in place.

A mock up with the cab. Not sure if I want the air tank there. I might replace it with a bell and put the tank on the left running board. To balance it out a bit more I'll probab;y add a rear platform.

And that's what things look like after 2 evenings of foodling with it. I think it's really, really, ugly, but Kim says she likes it. I'm thinking of making it battery powered with a simple 3 position switch... and just let it trundle around with 1 car in tow (more than that and I don't think the cheese drive they put in these things will survive....).

Yep, looks like it was hit by the ugly stick :bleh: I like it so far. What are your plans for the rear porch?

Either find an old toy truck kit and bash on the pickup "bed" or fashion one out of plastic. I am thinking it would look better with a more modern stamped steel/plastic/fiberglass bed rather that the older wooden ones built up from 4x4's

Since the Mack engine is +/- 1925-ish, I don't think "fibreglas" is really an option.
I have an old Ilco (Early LGB rip-off) chassis here that I haven't done anything with. I've chopped the rear 2" off and split it to make steps for both ends. It helped... but not a whole lot.

Well, here goes, no help whatsoever....
Why not centre the cab over the wheels and just have the mac bonnet at the front ?
Extend the cab for a bijoux inspection car :

or stick a big box on the back :

David, I like that top pic... If the cab roof I've got was longer I'd actually do something like that

Mik, Freedom Central's Juniata Falls Locomotive Werx has over 130 Delton C-16 Cab Roofs in inventory. Could you use a couple? How about combining what you have there and a combine body and an old truck and build a home-built articulated doodlebug like that old Santa Fe M.190:
