Autocoach conversion (WIP)

Still very much WIP but I thought it might be worthwhile posting this thread early to take advantage of any contructive comments you might have:

Take one IP Engineering coach that is no longer needed (due to the fact that I'm going for the new, larger, series).

Remove the front bulkhead and hack out 2 side windows.

Add a new front made from plasticard.

Attach a Regner Max to the rear end.

I'm thinking that this might be an original idea, but have this horrible feeling that one of you will tell me that it's been done before!

At least it's kept me busy during this foul weather.

Well, thats interesting ! I rather like that, and it looks in proportion to the regner max.
One helpful suggestion - I would look at shortening the front so its the same depth as the rest of the body so you can see the bufferbeam. I hesitate to suggest this as when its gone its gone !

Two less helpful suggestions - the ageing steampunk in me says it needs a clerestory & a spiffy headlight on the dash top hold its own gainst the Max.

Howvever it turns out - enjoy !

Thanks Dt,
I agonised a bit over the buffer beam and did a Google images search and saw that the original GWR one had a buffer beam that followed the contour of the front. So I'll go with a painted beam with a single centre buffer for now and see how it looks. Nice idea about the headlight

Well, the rain finally stopped and I managed to run the autocoach.

As you can see, it's still not fully finished yet but I just couldn't wait to see if it would actually work - and amazingly, it did ! Well, mostly it did :( . It looks like all I'll need to do is increase the size of the buffer on Max (I had frequent derailments caused by 'overruns' on my R1 curves) so I'm pretty pleased with the results so far.

Add some window trim, door furniture and a light or 2 to the front and I think I'll get away with it.

Brilliant , is that a flame i can see coming out from the loco?

Yep, it sure is (and looks terrific at night!). It's because I'm using Mamod type fuel tablets rather than the liquid fuel that burns with a clear flame. It's not done any damage to the loco or boiler and seems to work rather well. One tablet gives a steam up and a few minutes run. Adding a second tablet before the first one burns out gives another 7 minutes run.

That looks super Tom, I would suggest that a coat of paint in the livery of your choice would improve the look of her further, the headlamp as suggested, a fireman figure for the Max & the door knobs you suggest. Overall a brilliant idea!

Looks great, nice to see another regner max owner, its runs well! Mine has had a fair bit of work and is now gas fired, and yet your still seems better ;)
