I used an LED tea light candle like these ones. The flicker function is built into the LED itself.

A fun thing with those cheap LED tea lights is that some designs are actually driven by a chip playing a tune (like the annoying ones you get in greetings cards)! If you connect a small speaker you can hear the tune
