Wp&y Right Colours For Coaches

I've got an old (and cheap) LGB passenger car that needs some painting repair (scratches on roof and body). Which would be the right colours for WP&Y passenger coaches? Roof seems to be Dull Red; and body Green, but Olive green, Dark green, ecc ?
I do have some coaches from Bachmann and LGB, but it's not easy to match the real colour of coaches with catalogue sample of paints (Tamiya, Humbrol, ecc).

002.JPG From Memory and its going back quite a bit, I think I used a Car Aerosol Landrover Green (!!) for coach body, cannot remember what I used for the roof, but would imagine any dull red would suffice.

You will find that if you check out a car- parts retailer you will find many aerosols that are perfectly suitable for painting G scale stock, Just as a matter of interest I attach a pic I have used in anothe thread on here, shows a loco I resprayed in the 80s, Car aerosols are even better now! ( the colour of that old loco is not the Landrover Green I refer to!!!)

I think the coach bodies are probably Pullman Green, but not sure about the roofs.
 
Hmm. That to me looks kind of Khaki. Colours on computer screens are almost impossible, as it varies from monitor to monitor. An R.A.L. number sorts it once and for all.

001.JPG Heres a Pic of my LGB WP&Y Alco & Combine, The loco was the first batch of the first livery LGB produced, Combine was definately not Green with a red roof!!

Incidentally the Bachmann 1:225 Big Hauler cars are pretty accurate I believe.

Funnily enough, it's the plain steel sided coaches, designed with disabled access, that have faded the worst, and do now really look military khaki. they didn't look that interesting either, so I didn't photo them, but you can just see a bit of one in the first photo in the link above.

The bug mauler carriage livery can't be far away. The roofs are varying shades of brown, but that dark one in the link above is a bit of an oddity - I didn't see many that shade.

'twas a grey and dismal morning, which didn't help the photography :(:(

If our models are kept reasonably pristine - as mine are - and unless we have weathered them, they should all appear very similar in colour.

However, dirt,.exhaust fumes, the vagaries of weather, travel and how old the paintwork is often causes the colours to fade or look different.
GWR (UK) fans will recall the white painted roofs of the passenger coaches which, after a short period in revenue service, soon appeared grey.

I was never 100% sure about the Blue White livery, The livery was the first livery LGB produced the loco in, so I would guess that it was prototypical as the first production is usually in a prototypical livery,, those that follow are not always 'real'

WIKIPEDIA says that around 1969 there were extensive works on the WP&R upgrading/rebuilding/ re routing etc and at that time the Yellow Green Livery was replaced by a BLUE/WHITE/BLACK livery, then in the 1990s they reverted to a Yellow/Green livery again....

Reading all this makes me quite fancy another WP Alco, I must resist ( mustn't I?)

Yes, and some of the locos went to South America, and then returned to WP&YR, so other liveries of the Alco and Shovelnoses are quite possible (probably without the White Pass script - mmmmm)
 
Thanks! I will get Tamiya AS24 and let you know.
Next step will be decals; I could find and use water decals for D&RGW, but I have never seen WP&Y decals. Do youknow where could I find WP&Y decals (not dry)?

the blue and white livery was short lived, like about 2-3 years as I recollect, before the all blue flying meatball livery, then the green and yellow for the second time.

I agree Pullman green and a dullish /faded roof red. otoh , regardless of the prototype, I would paint to match other WP&Y cars that you may own. FWIW, the LGB cars are more a 'clear' forest green-still looks fine to me.
