Would you like to ride my Tatra car ?

Well you know how it is.
Theres been a lot of discussion about how the hobby has changed, and the need
or otherwise to scratchbuild. For me, its a hobby which fulfils my urge to make stuff, so although I
buy models I also try and make them. There is a problem, a big problem, though - I have the craft
skills of a leper and the artistic eye of a housebrick. Even SWMBO recognises that my hidden DIY
talents are best left hidden; "You earn it and I'll pay someone else to do it properly". I am envious
of many on this forum who turn their hands to producing models of great excellence, but recalling
Cyrils harrowing account of his experiences in 00 I pretty much know where I stand.

Now, I haven't given up - nor will I. I try everything, usually only once, but I try. Mel waves his
airbrush over a model and its weathered - mine looks like the inside of an H block. Paul (stainz)
sprays his engines black and they look great - I get a silhouette on the toolrack behind my bench. Mick
made hinges for his engine shed doors - I quit long before the doors.

So, I fight Inadequacy with the Sword of Innovation. There must be craft techniques out there I can
master which will help me produce models I can be proud of, or even just be prepared to show anybody
else. Join me in my latest step......

Have a look at some of the work Andrey Kuznetsov does - his site is in Russian

Now this clever bloke takes pictures of a vehicle and produces an HO scale card kit with only a few
hours work. I've tried motorising card kits in the past, and they just look like card kits no matter
what you do. As these are based on pictures they look so much better.

Anyway, I found this kit on his website http://papertrolley.ucoz.ru/load/5-...t some trucks and see if we can make it go.

dam daived.. you have the tallent mate!

Neat - I like the method.

Building stuff from card?

Nice work, just don't leave it out in the rain.;)

"artistic eye of a housebrick" :rolf::rolf::rolf: I'll have to remember that one the next time someone doesn't like my finished product.

Love the tram. When you guys say that you're building from card stock, what exactly is your definition of card stock?

Pre-war Tatra produced state of the art (that air cooled V8 still makes me drool), quality, if quirky, designed cars. So be proud

The tram is made from waterproof paper over a pvc foam sheet base. All the roof detail is made from the same material, so its as robust and waterproof as anything made out of, say, styrene. I was going to use card until I discovered that Superglue is the best thing to glue pvc foamed sheet. In the end I took Ross's advice and bought the Trade strength stuff.

If you are going to use card instead then it needs to be a good quality mounting board or bristol board, not recycled packaging, otherwise you don't get a clean edge.

I really like that David. Looks well - a very clever piece of work. Well thought out.
I only tried it once (well, half tried - wooden roof and ply body with photo paper stuck round side) - colour ran even under the varnish.

That wouldn't be the latest Gauge 3 project that we were discussing last week would it. ;);)

Great job on the Tram BTW David. After all vinyl printing kits onto card worked for locolines so why not. Nice idea.

Nice one David....

Very Clever. You wield the sword of innovation with considerable expertise!!!

Nice one, David....I found the plans page I might make the body in perspex and overlay a vynl wrap for the body. Alyn

Ok then... In view of the fact that it looks like a Tatra car, its time to make it go....
I've had small stash of the old MDC motor blocks for ages, and as they have lain largely unloved for 20 odd years, two have been donated to the tram

Some foamed sheet and a 3/4" hole later and we have a bolster....

It runs.... 10 minutes ago it made its maiden voyage ! Its very grumbly - the hollow shell doesn't help much and the truck mountings are very stiff - but when we get back from the SWMBO-in-laws I'll leave it running for the afternoon.:thumbup:

I think it looks great - well done - and complete with passengers!

Looks dead smart to me. Probably the original ran grumbly if it was of the eastern (motor) bloc :rolf:

To reduce the amplifying properties of the body, try putting some screwed up bubble wrap inside it. Should act as a muffle.

fantastic daived.. start doing a kit off the boddy ...im sure it would sell ..
