Interesting options, had another thought (2 in a day, very worrying!) Stippled a piece with a wire brush if that's the right term for hitting it with a wire brush!

Yep, I use exactly that method (though I have a more substantial steel brush), to distress the scribed stone foamboard. I find that thinking about my current least favourite politician helps keep me going, during the process.
