Roofs on and an all over shot of Halfords satin lacquer. Then the glazing and frames went in. Just the brass furniture and numbering/lettering to do. At last something prototypical for my NG/G 16 to haul. Max

Bridge rectifiers arrived - well, it was 1 for £1.38 or 5 for £1.98 - now I'm just wondering where I'm going to use the other four :emo::emo:

During the ‘Great Isolation’ we’ve been moving forward with the engine shed and coaling stage at Farnham Common. The coaling stage is just waiting for a spray of varnish before being put in place. It could also do with some coal, but where do you get coal in Northwest Florida?
The engine shed is also nearly finished. The doors were being put on today. The size of the hinges and associated screws were a bit of a challenge to my contact lenses and I managed to make a mess of a few, but I’m sure they’re salvageable. All looking good to me however.

Do they not have BBQ Coal in Florida or perhaps even charcoal? Both ought to work and be sifted in a veg sifter to give lumps of near enough the correct size.

I’ve not seen BBQ coal, but charcoal is a great idea. Thank you.

Doing a search for a small bag of charcoal on line (to avoid going out to the store!) I came across a small bag of coal. Apparently to be give as gifts when the recipient has been ‘naughty’ (no, I don’t understand either!). It’s $8 and appears to be just enough to be belted with an ‘ammer to get the right size.

Made this, as before, made to be glanced at rather than inspected! Coal is barbecue stuff smashed with a hammer, the ladder is froman old bit of mesh pond cover. It probably won't last long, but it's kept me quiet for a few days

Handrails and door handles done. Just need to get some BECC letters and numerals of the right sizes and colour (gold) and we are done. Next up - a B wagon, an OZ-5 ventilated wagon, a V-16 guards van and an ST lumber wagon to go with the TZ-9 water cooled wagon I made a couple of weeks ago. This lockdown is proving quite productive so far Max

The Claptowte Railway is in need of eight signals. They do not have to be operative as they are largely cosmetic and scenic. Having searched around I have decided on the Easy Build Model by Model Town. They are basic in design and construction, fulfil all my needs and have the merit of being very reasonably priced. Being an easy budget kit, the one glaring omission is a ladder. I searched and searched and all I could come up with was a brass item from GRS at £6.60 a throw, or plastic items no cheaper..

dig 200429001.JPG

I hunted around for ideas and in the end I bought a 60cm x 90cm piece of 12mm square welded mesh for rabbit hutches etc., from Ebay for £7.99

dig 200427001.JPG

I used tin snips to cut off four 60cm strips and then filed down any remaining protruding nibs, which did take a bit of time. I ended up with four lengths of ladder which I then cut in half. I think although sold in metric, the mesh was in fact 24"x36" as I have ended up with eight 12" ladders. That works out at £1 per ladder. I have enough mesh left to make another 62 ladders which would bring the cost down to about 11 pence each. Job done

Maybe Model Town will give you a discount on the other 62 signal kits.

Looking at this I was going to jump in to suggest exactly what you used for ladder, glad I read the full piece!

Nearly ready for the "paint shop". 4 more or Resurgam's exquisite SAR series of kits.

20200504_195038.jpg

2 x OZ-5, V-16 & B wagon. Those OZ's have some very fine detail round the door areas. Despite their simple appearances they are quite complex. But they all go together like dream. Max
