Fine for indoor use Paul, but Bachmann steel track rusts like hell if left outdoors. If you're short of R1 points, drop me a PM - I've been selling LGB ones at £15.
 
Definitely not for outside, I'm sticking with LGB with a little Piko for that. I have a bit of the Bachmann track gathered in over the years while thinking about doing G but no points. If I use it it will be a quick inside layout.

IIRC that Bachman track is hollow steel, rusts in no time if left outdoors and doesn't use normal fishplates.

Short answer to "was this a good buy?" would be "Not really" unless you've already got some of that track for use around the Christmas tree indoors. Which you say you do have, so hopefully you'll find it useful.
