Wanted Accucraft Wheels

Maybe these are what you are looking for. Bachmann 88071 (92421) 1:20.3 FINESCALE 32.5MM WHEEL SETS (4/CARD) 2 PAIRS NEW 22899880716 | eBay I bought one set of these a few years ago. They are slightly too large to fit LGB coaches. They drag on the brake shoes molded on most LGB trucks. By the way, these seem much better made than the typical Bachmann G scale metal wheelsets. The ones I got have no wobble at all.

They are the Spectrum ones as opposed to the Big Hauler ones. My calipers on an older Big Hauler wheel came up as 31mm. I see the ones above on the card are marked as 32.5mm which are the same as the wheels on my Spectrum 1:20.3 rolling stock.

Talk about misleading advertising... what they mean is the scale of 1:20.3 is finescale (it is not)... the wheels are definitely not finescale...

Greg

Some think the 'F' for 1:20.3 scale stands for 'Fine' but it does not. It stands for 'Fifteen' as in millimeters per foot. The Bachmann needs to go back to school it seems. :nerd:

Let us be done with this confusion! :tmi:

IOM E guards van (presumably the same as the 4 wheeled coach).

IOM G van (the van with port holes)

Yes the first one looks correct, and size is thereabouts

Phil, they look the correct size, however all my Bachmann wheels seem to be 30mm

It's the mistake that a lot of people make - the think the 'F' in Fn3 stands for 'fine'.

Many Brits have never heard of the American 'F' scale, as we use G3

So that is 'G' for 45mm gauge track, representing a 3 foot track-gauge prototype?

Nothing to do with Gauge 3?

I am easily confuddled. :(:wondering:

In large scale Bachmann make the "Spectrum" range of products, separate from their familiar "Big Hauler" branded products. Both run on 45 mm gauged track systems. The bulk of this "Spectrum" range depicts 3 ft gauge prototypes (real or imagined) scaled at a uniform 1:20.3 scale (supposedly), to match the notional 3ft track gauge depicted to fit 45 mm gauge. For the sake of standardisation (cost ?) most of this rolling stock uses 32.2 dia wheel sets. You will find some minor variations with other makers and different prototypes.

However, Bachmann also produce the aforesaid "Big Hauler" range that confusingly can represent similar US NG stock (and standard gauge) to run on 45 mm gauge, but at not at prototypical scales to match the track gauge. Bachmann "Big Hauler" products are mostly scaled between 1:22.5 and 1:29. Good old standardisation dictates that a wheel size of 30 mm is selected. Which seems to be used by a lot of other makers, given the popularity of replacement steel wheel sets in this size for 45 mm.

This thread is getting a little confusing. Max

in the US, F scale is 15mm : 1 ft

So in US nomenclature, Fn3 is F (15mm : 1 ft) n (narrow gauge) 3 (3 ft gauge)

The US system is probably more consistent in its application across the gauges than the UK system which, itself is different from the European gauges, and thus, as with many things British, a most delightful muddle

Found some "Bachmann Big Hauler 88071 32.5mm Metal Wheel Set" so with a bit of luck these should fit, I will let you know.

I don't mean to be pedant but they are not 'Big Haulers', they are 'Spectrum'. There is a difference. You have the correct model number though so all should be good.

Yeah, Bachmann is all over the place on wording, but definitely not big hauler stuff. There are locos that are big haulers that came in a Spectrum box (the first Anniversary edition).

But the spectrum line also included the 1:20.3 scale locos and cars, which is what these wheels are for.

Yep. Like the first model of L&B Lyn came in a Spectrum box and the later much improved version came in a Big Hauler box.
Generally speaking though Spectrum is usually their 1:20.3 stuff.

One of my early purchases, c 2004, that Lyn. 2nd hand in a very sun damaged Spectrum branded box (and matching cloudy windows). Scale was reckoned by some to be around 1:22.5, but the proportions were all over the place. Knuckle couplers (on an L&B loco !) and awful plastic "detail". At least the "Southern" paint job looked good. But it ran ok and it set me off on a 16 mm track. Sold it for £199 on Ebay, no reserve, about 2 months before the " improved" version was announced. Phew ! The Accucraft 16 mm scale live steamer I bought really showed it up so it had to go. I had an Annie, bought around the same time - NIB, RGS in a big hauler branded box. That was nice, kept it clean and sold it here a couple of years ago. Max

Yeah, the proportions are all over the place on the Bachmann Lyn versions although some Accucraft 4 wheeled L&B vans etc. behind her don't look too out of place because of their tiny size. I ended up getting the Accucraft live steam Lyn too.
