USA Trains power bogie

Have the chance to obtain one of these for a kitbashing project. Are they any good when used singly? I see that it has a pick-up skate as well as presumably having live wheels, so it should be OK at low speeds over pointwork.

Any thoughts gratefully received.
 
They are quite good.
Power pickup, depending on type is skates, wheels and truck side frame bearings.
 
I have a USA motor block in a boxcab I built. It works very well. I think the boxcab will be in the Feb issue of Garden Railways (US periodical).

Works great in my boxcab - both track and battery power (with the flick of a switch)

Hi Bob,
Nice job. How did you attach the motor block to the body, so it could come apart for servicing, etc.?
 
I am re-motoring my Bachmann trams with USAT motor blocks. Not had any problems up to now.
 
If all fails read the instructions!

I'd like to see some more pictures of the conversion as I was considering doing this myself to my Bachmann tram. Which size block did you use ?

The block is the one used in the NW2, 84mm I believe. I will dig out some photos tomorrow. I did a write up for the GSS Journal last year so send me your e-mail address & I will send the text.

A few pictures of the Bachmann conversion as requested.
First cut the ends off the axle & paint the wheels if required.

Remove the old motor block

Cut the projections from the underside

If you are using analogue its helpful at this stage to remove the motor, turn it upside down & replace it.
It makes wiring easier.
Mount the new motor block, you can use double sided sticky pads but I just glue it on with evostick.

I am considering using a power bogie for my project as well. I know that the wheelbase is 84 mm, but I could not find any info on the other dimensions. Can you tell me what is the height of the block above the rails? Also what is the dimension of the wheel?

There are also 71.7mm and 94.5mm wheelbase types.

Big :thumbup: from me too! I've been attempting to improve the bachmann unit in my tram for ages. Know what I'm getting next, does anyone know the best place to get them from?
 
I think Resin D'Etre ltd may be able to supply them, just found their site. £35 each, just gotta talk swmbo into it, as it's so close to christmas.
