I have begun constructing a shed to shelter trains from the elements during running season.
"Six-inch" (+/- 5.625") fence boards, six feet (approx) long, are the basic material. Being solid lumber, they should outlast plywood.

First long wall assembled Thursday afternoon. The crosspieces (buttresses?) are 3/4" nailing strips, glued (Titebond 3) and screwed (roundhead construction screws, because I have known flatheads to split thin sections of wood if they are tightened down just a tad too far). This will be the exterior side of the wall. I didn't apply glue to the butt joint between the planks; I'll fill the gap with paintable silicon sealant.

Friday's job so far: Second wall and the usual forest of clamps.
 
For the first morning in a good while, the weather and my back agreed that working outdoors would be possible, so I got to work on putting the sides and back of the train shed together.

I apologize to Messrs Rhino and Madman for any palpitations the imprecise assembly may cause them. Much filler will be employed.
 
Outdoor day again. A touch warmer than ideal, but I'm working slow and staying in the shade as much as possible. A/C is off, and house is pleasantly cool.
Anyway:

With D2's help, carried the shed structure down the yard and placed it on the base. As you may see, the walls are warpy, but nothing that cannot be "persuaded" to straighten up.

Crossbeams sliced from fence boards on table saw. Clamped (use your imagination), glued and screwed in place. Walls duly de-warped.
Next step, plot out front wall and doors and lifting roof.
I took the clippers to low-hanging shrubbery (NI!) to make room for said roof.
 
IMG_0442.jpegIMG_0443.jpegAugust slipped by: too hot, or too wet, or too little energy, but this morning was bright, dry and cool, so I dragged out the table saw and cut roof joists.
Interrupted, of course, by GP taxi duties, I did manage to start assembly as the sun was setting.
Then I put the tools away and tarped the work because rain is in the FriSatSun forecast. May get more done on Monday, but the rest of the week is booked solid.
 
What material are you using for the roof?
Maybe that wavy fiberglass/plastic item light weight
 
Glued a couple of 3/4 x 3/4 nailing strips to the ply roof as guides for fitting the joist structure.

The 1x2 under the ply is there to take out a curve in the ply. Once the joists are fastened in place, they should take care of it.

Joists placed just to make sure they fit. Good thing I checked as some of my calculated pencil lines are in the wrong place :oops: -- no surprise :p, my 'rithmeticklish skills were never much good. Nothing that can't be twitched into the right place, and I won't even need a lump hammer to do it :whew:.
According to the weather forecasts, I won't need the tarp tonight -- but can I trust them?

I was going to bring out the table saw to rip the narrow piece for the front of the joists, but the vertebrae nixed that idea. Next week, God and Ma Nature willing.
 
It looks like a cool project, Chris. Someday I hope to do something like this for the LHRR.
 
After much overthinking and whatiffery, I finally took advantage of a bright, cool morning and got out the table saw to slice the front edge of the joist frame.

Yes, the guard is off because it was an angle cut and the guard support wouldn’t match the angle.

And the usual serried ranks of clamps holding the glue joint tight.
So here am I sitting in the shade while the lilacs drop their leaves and birdies chirp in the trees.

Yes, Cap’n, sir, I said tight, but not a drop of rum was involved :giggle:, nor yet a drip of beer. Had a beer with dinner at OVAR on Tuesday; it didn’t sit well o_O. Damned pills :oops:. Besides, the sun is still on the hither side of the yardarm.

This afternoon, I sat and ate an ice cream, whilst watching people walk back and forth over the sand, to go smurfing....

It must be smurfing, because they come back blue with the cold!
