This story is extremely interesting. You are making a very good model and I do not blame you for letting doubters go to heck. What matters is that it is an extremely good likeness of the beast. You are scratch building it and all credit for that.

I built an 0 Gauge Railway that I used to take to shows and used to get many good comments. But there were rivet counters that used to look at it with scorn. My stock phrase used to be that I built it to a 'common standard of mediocrity' that usually stumped them or at least find someone else to ass their scorn upon.

Re the Rivets, what are these Russian Rivets? I have in the past used various Dressmaking Pins as Rivets, these are easier to source. But you do get idd looks in the sort of ladies sewing shops when asking where the pins are!

I'm only going in this far as I've had a few emails from armchair experts ( aka rivet counters) telling me that I'm not being very accurate in the model..... One tells me that the wheels are discs and I should put spoked wheels on.... another says the angles are wrong. Why don't I care? simple they cant make a decent cup of tea, let alone anything else

Its all about your take on the item, how it is in your minds eye, given what you are using for the chassis.

Never mind what the rivet counters say, angles, spokes or not, who cares, its all how you do it.
I would never have thought of casting a weight, let alone have the confidence to do it.

No I dont venture in to the dressmaking sections... But I assure you I get some weird looks in the bead shop where I get my little beads that are used for psudeo insulators....
But when I last went in I took a phot with me and all the beaders gathered around to see why a bloke would invade their domain.....

Hi,

Cambrian Models make some rivets, in plastic they are triangular is section, and are 1.5mm diameter, so in 1/20th scale they are an inch i diameter; here is a link http://cambrianmodels.co.uk/16intropage2.html

Just one size, they are a fairly easy, to apply I add them with a fine brushful of liquid cement, one by one, they have to be added onto a Plasticard, (or paper that idea did not really work for my purposes) sheet though.

Here is a photo of a stationary boiler being built that has lots of them!

More on the boiler to follow; its one of two at the moment.

Did you know that there used to be a steam loco on the RhB that had a huge electric motor inside the boiler, that drove the axles through a worm gear ?

The interesting thing about Rule 8 is that it allows for rivet counters, provided that it's only their own rivets that they count

There was an experiment in Switzerland with an electric powered steam engine. I think it was standard gauge though.
