My layout is very basic - one non-smoking loco runs at any one time with just a couple of coaches, no digital stuff, no double heading, usually without lighting. So not much load on the power supply, which is supplied right next to the track. Mains supply is via armoured cable; adds a whole new meaning to “going on a bender.” [For thise unfamiliar with native English vernacular, that means consuming an excessive quantity of alcoholic beverage on a tour of various establishments during an evening out in one’s local district.]

means the same thing here. If the transformer is right next to the track, and that is the only feed point you could use almost anything any gauge... it's too short to matter.
