A saying that when taken out of context excuses all manner of "wise men" to perpetrate acts of dishonesty.
Maybe Bader would have made an effective politician

Can I pick the brains of the collected wisdom out there. There are very few pictures of Wenhaston though she does appear in a couple of videos. It's really difficult to make out if she had a polished brass dome or merely a polished painted dome.

In this clip it looks as if her dome is painted - http://youtu.be/ygtjCLh4YBs?t=52s ...re I apply the final coat of paint? Rik

Rik,

Studying "Branch Line to Southwold", Middleton Press, reveals just two pics of No 4, Wenhaston, B&W of course.
One gives the impression of a painted dome, as do pics of all the other locos.
The second give a distinct impression of polished brass.
So, no real help!

Re:Southwold No. Wenhaston (ish)

Yes, that's what I thought.
Then this one confused me:-

Is it just reflections?

Re:Southwold No. Wenhaston (ish)

That would appear to be the logical conclusion Steph'. I quite agree with you.

Re:Southwold No. Wenhaston (ish)

Maybe they got fed up with polishing the dome so painted it :D

Thanks for all your researches and suggestions, folks. I've decided to go with a painted dome. Firstly, the dome I've used is made of plastic and so I'd have to paint it with brass paint (or apply gold leaf?) - either way I doubt it will look like the real thing. Secondly, the majority of pictures seem to suggest it was painted - particularly those taken towards the end of the railway's life. And lastly, my model is 'inspired' by the original rather than a faithful scale model (and anyway it'll be easier to paint the whole thing one uniform colour)

Progress so far.
She's out of the paint shops but still needs to be lined and have her nameplates attached. There's also a bit of titivating here and there (including the installation of a driver). Once that's done I'll firmly fix the cab roof in place.

Rik that looks very good indeed! Presume awaiting black for the smoke box, chimney and roof?

Most impressive.
Before you apply the final black paint have you considered modifying the shape of the valve chests to more closely resemble Wenhaston's?

Hi Rik , first off the loco looks great +dome in green also for the info on the batteries ,i will watch how you put in the speed controller ect as far as justifying running what stock I am a big fan of Rule 8 :thumbup::thumbup: regards Dave

Not sure whether to modify them or not. I can live with them as they are - might leave them as is for now and think about it at a later date.

I've installed that already. Decided to do it before going into the paint shop in case I messed up the paintwork. I've been running her today and am well pleased with her hauling power. She ran out of juice this afternoon but as I've been test-running on and off over the past week or so I'm hopeful she'll hold a charge for a normal day's running.

I might finish off the blog posting this evening, which will have more details of how I installed the electrics. Will post the link on here if I do - but there's a few more hours of daylight left so may go back out to run a few more trains.

Hi James
Yes - on the todo list.
Just seen your article in this month's Continental Modeller BTW - nice one!

Rik
PS - May install another chimney though. You'll probably notice that the top rim is crooked. Made the mistake of using Superglue for the whitemetal castings and it went off immediately without leaving me any wriggle-room. Next time I'll use epoxy.

Re:Southwold No. Wenhaston (ish)

That's a fantastic looking loco. Great job!

Re:Southwold No. Wenhaston (ish)

Very nice Rik.

I'm hugely impressed.

You should be proud.

Thanks Martino et al

Trouble is, I can see all the flaws and compromises - I could write a list!
Now I've made one, I'd know how to do it properly next time.

I think that's the bane of any kind of model building or for that matter anything creative! The creator/builder is so engrossed that any perceived flaws gain much more prominence than they deserve. That said, I really don't think you have need worry - the loco is oozing character and shows great modelling skills. And if learning a few things along the way is inspiration for the next project, that can only be a good thing!

By the way I rediscovered your blog recently, having bookmarked it ages ago. It's a great read and a really fantastic resource. Thanks!

Thanks for that encouragement

All my models are loosely based on the originals. My interests lie very much in the operational aspects of the railway and so as long as I have a loco and some stock which gives the impression (with eyes half closed) of a rural narrow gauge railway going about its business I'm happy.

I've just posted a sort-of step-by-step account of how I went about the construction here:
http://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/how-i-built-manning-wardle-0-6-2.html < Link To http://riksrailway.blogsp...ning-wardle-0-6-2.html

There's still more to add, but it hopefully gives a reasonable overview of what I did should anyone want to have a go themselves.
