Southwold No. 4 Wenhaston (ish)

Re:Southwold No. Wenhaston (ish)

Nice one! I think the loco's really at home - the line and the engine compliment each other. Lovely build.

Is this the loco that you want to have a feedback esc on?
Yes - if it's possible. Coming from DCC I'm a bit spoilt - I was surprised by how much difference even a slight gradient makes (I now realise how many 'accidental' additional gradients I have).

PS At the risk of sounding sycophantic, just wanted to say thanks for the accounts you've given on this forum of your loco builds. It was those which gave me the confidence and inspiration to have a go myself.

Thanks folks much appreciated

Are you going to give us a master class in loco painting, Steph? It's still something I approach with much trepidation.

Maybe worth an article in GR?

a lovely job, being lazy and no re reading the thread what speed control solution did you adopt?
Hi
Brian Jones Mac Five which I bought via eBay a while ago. Brian has just updated the chip for me.

Hi Rik, I asked that before we got going on the other thread- is it a generic transmitter or a "train" one - i am betting it's in the fine control of the joystick vs range of speed, which was preventing the normal elegant running we see on you railway.

To be clear it's a stunning railway and loco!! I for one think if you want to set something running remotely any old tx will do- if you want realistic slow control get something made for purpose if budget permits.

No - it's the cheapest possible 2.4 gHz tx (£2.50) designed to replace one used to control those mini helicopters - so certainly not a train-specific one. (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKz...le me to use the throttle joystick. Rik

A few more details added. A bespoke driver (Fimo - not got the hang of faces yet!) and added a bracket to keep the valve gear bracket from fouling the track.

Not sure whether to add lining as per the other stock on the railway. I've positioned the nameplate and number is about the same position as it was on the Southwold Railway and it enhances the connection. Although the books say that Wenhaston was lined in light and dark green I can't see any sign of lining in any of the photos I've come across. Somehow she looks quite workmanline without lining. I might take up Neil's suggestion and modify the valve chest - but this is actually a bit tricky as it keeps the valve guide in place.

Further information on the original loco's livery from the Southwold Railway Trust president Alan Taylor

It seems she was lined out when delivered but was then painted green. However, over the years the paint faded and the original livery and lining showed through.

He's sent me these two photos to illustrate this - and has given permission for their distribution (as they're way out of copyright)

And our conclusions were correct - the dome was painted
