Hi all,

Hope this is the right place!

I need to buy a new soldering iron and wondered what you use. Ill be using it for general solering but also for things like brass castings ( cross bar to cylinder face on a gauge 3 loco is waiting) and also etch kits. Now should I get a gas torch and a seperate electric iron? Also I use plumbers flix on brass what do you tend to use? Ive got by with what I have but decided I want to get some good kit and get into more etched kits after also getting some bending bars.

thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

With those parameters you will need some serious heat, so both are needed I think. the soldering torch could be one that providentially Aldi (IF you have a local one) have on sale on Sunday;

this looks to be the kit from another site

and from Aldi's site

http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_20733.htm < Link To http://www.aldi.com.au/au..l/offers/2827_20733.htm

for the larger source a gas torch would still be needed but the Aldi version looks quite good, I suspect its English only a years guarantee (their German stuff is 3 years) The only thing wrong with it that I can see is that you cannot get replacement tips. their price is less than half what I paid for my Nimrod version!

If you contact them (via the web) you can get weekly fliers.

No connection with them - they just have a local store, and their (bought) equipment is good!

Yours Peter
