Shocking

Anybody else get a shock switching points using a manual LGB lever, I am sure it must be a Static shock as the line is only 19v but it packs a bit of a kick when it does it :) Nearly need a stick to poke it with rather than using my finger..:sweating:

That's not right! My manual point levers are plastic. Probably is static, but have you opened them up to look inside? Is your line outside or set up on fake grass?

If it is inside then then the static would be possible, outdoors it should dissipate unless you were running during a thunderstorm.

Are you running a carpetbahn?

It's an outside line, no artificial grass near the points but there is some in the garden, it's only on one set of points it happens, next time I run I will make a note if I am standing one with foot on the artificial grass or not. I swapped the lever off a set off a set of points that doesn't do it, to this set and it still bites back so it's not the lever ? I could swap the points out for a spare set but I doubt it would make a difference.

Just realized what is different about this set of points it has a Foam Board building right next to them I wonder if the building is building up Static and discharging through me when I touch the points ?

Unlikely, unless the building is actually touching the points. Try wrapping a piece of wire around the lever & putting the other end into the ground, you'll earth the lever that way, rather than through you.

The building base is connected to the points sleepers, inside the building is a steel spike that goes through the base down into the ground below, that was there to stop the base / building moving as it's only a line side hut, the spike should in theory earth the building, I suppose I need to remove the base and see if it is that causing the Static. Annoying if it is as the building / base was there to put an electric point motor inside, but not a good idea if static is building up in the building I suppose.

Some people seem to be better conductors of static than others. My wife will get a static shock from something - whilst I will not! At one time, it used to be popular to earth cars with a trailing strip.

I wonder what Wimshurst would have said?

I wouldn't worry about Wimshurst, it you try that trick on your good lady wife. I think it's going to be the Faraday cage for you!

I am more susceptible to Static shocks, I hate SWIMBO's Mini every-time I open the door it gets me :) might just have to employ a stick to changes the points or my Son
