Simples.

1 Take one piece of card and print both sides with a rusty texture.

2 Run through the wife's cross cut shredder.

3 Collect bits and glue to a thicker bit of card and place in car.

I don't think you need pictures of how to do the above. Oh BTW, good for only dry days

Perhaps a good shellacking would make it more durable.

Nice idea Woderwick. Here are some pictures of my Scrap Load, consists of bits from the crane shown in the picture. Old ends of rusty nails, other bits of rusty junk. All the plastic painted rust as you suggest.

As you can see from the picture it has all been mounted on a piece of ply which has had fake planks drawn on so that the load can be removed. Fits any of my LGB Playtrain Opens.

Use thin plasticard or similar, run through the shredder, glue in waggon etc, spray rusty colours etc load now water proof/weatherproof. Alyn

Here is the N version. It's abit washed out due to the proximty of the flash, but I think you can see the desired effect of individual rusty sheets has worked. The cutter is a bit coarse for N so I used a Guillotene, same principle tho.

just stick an old wire wool pan scouer into your open wagon with a dab of hot melt glue and leave out side in a spare sideing for a day or two it wont want painting rust colour it will go rusty all on its own and if you chuck in a few larger bit of metel then you will have an aurthentic pile of scrap

An excellent source of scrap loads is your local machine shop, ask them for a box of swarf off the lathe or milling machine, and leave outside for a day or two and you have an instant rusty scrap load.
