Ruritanian Railways - 2011

Great pics from , no doubt, a great day.
Twin wizzy cranks look great.

Ian's delightful shunter, based on half a Bachmann GE 44 tonner. A real treat of a loco this. Beautifully simple in concept. Just on/off and forward/reverse controls for a constant speed loco which a second train can then try to get round on a single-track line. Harder than it sounds, as we found out! An excellent example of how to generate an interesting operating exercise with the absolute minimum of expense. Power is provided by a standard 7.2 volt r/c car battery.

Don't underestimate the mini-loco's power either. It had no problem hauling this lot up the 1 in 20 of Pootank pass for 30 minutes!
Gareth WILL be impressed. :rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

The Wednesdays Only parcels train (with passenger accommodation) continues to amaze and entertain onlookers. Today this rather unexpected combination appeared between bouts of rain.

Apparently "Mighty Mouse" has been fitted with multiple-unit cables which enable it to partner the railbus trailer. Ruritanian Railways sources report that as the trailer is not used in mid-afternoon during the school holidays, this is a better solution than taking a vehicle from one of the "standard" coaching rakes which tend to be busy during the tourist season.

Could this be a permanent solution, guaranteeing survival of the WO train? Watch this space!

all two of the Ruritainian trainspotting community must be feeling pretty confused. Alcos on Saturday and this lash up on Wednesday! Good fun.

I always look forward to seeing your posts on this railway. :D

Ruritanian Railways is exceptionally pleased to announce the replacement for "Mighty Mouse". Mighty Mouse 2!

Yes, one Schoema has replaced another by a series of happy events documented more fully in a separate thread: http://www.gscalecentral.net/tm?high=&m=163707&mpage=1#163707

Nicknamed "The Prodigal Diesel" by Zenda depot staff, this old friend is now fully operational by means of onboard battery power and has been hauling the hopper rake up Pootank Pass with consummate ease. Very pleasing to the eye, according to both Ruritania's trainspotters.

Love that colour scheme.

I take it the battery fitted then mate?

Yep. Scarcely any butchery needed! See thread in the loco section "A tale of two Schoemas".

Delighted with the new arrival at the WTO Bahn of MM1 from Ruritania the shed staff are equally pleased to hear that the return of an old friend pleases the Chef Des Trains over at RR.

Certainly the red Schoema looks dandy hauling those matching red hoppers up the pass once more.

Saturday, September 17th was the date for 2011's second Ruritanian open day. A crowd best described as "the usual suspects" was in attendance, boosted by a flying column of the Cottam Strassenbahn, to whom fraternal greetings were expressed in Esperanto.

The day began with the traditional attempt of one of Gareth's loco's to ascend Pootank Pass. Altogether now:
"The wheels on the U go round and round
round and round, round and round
The wheels on the U go round and round
But it doesn't move far"

Attendees expressed their sympathy in the customary way with hoots of derision, while Ruritania's MD craftily sold Gareth a kilo of lead shot to do the decent thing with.

Mel brought the usual small jewels from Wetton (or is it Gooey). The closer you get, the better Thomas coaches look!

From darkest Oxfordshire, Coggesrailway's sublime battery job on a Bachmann 44-tonner. Hauls like a good 'un!

DaveHub brought his work home with him in the shape of a Piko Taurus and a rake of container flats. This turned out to be the star turn of the day, for many, many wonderful reasons....

On previous occasions these get togethers have usually seen a couple of trains gently trundling around evoking "oohs" and "aahs" of appreciation. This time matters were slightly different. Shropshire Lad's doughnuts and Mel's pork pie (thanks both, by the way  ) must have been laced with something that prevented any of the participants from seeing hazards or, in Dave's case, remembering how to drive a train. Dave allegedly drives trains for a living..... :nail:

Dave assured us that his r/c Taurus was working fine, so the first touch when he went backwards rather than forwards was clearly just misfortune...

as was splitting the points at Zenda due to unfamiliarity with the need to reduce speed. Obviously that never happens on the "real" railway...

and a plain line derailment could have happened to anyone....

though trying to go round the return loop at Warp factor 8 may have been a miscalculation. Well caught, Luca!

So Dave's Taurus was discreetly removed from service for attention, creating a new intermodal terminal at Zenda.

Having seen a professional driver in action, others attempted to emulate. Luca gave a nice demonstration of the effects of reversing at some speed through a point set for the wrong direction:

The Cottam Strassenbahn's tram featured passengers who sang the Internationale as they advanced with revolutionary fervour (mp3 track on a soundchip) and Stevie Wonder as driver. They weren't singing now....

However, Dave had solved the problems with his r/c kit and was completely confident that everything was under control. In fact he said so about 10 milliseconds before this:

As the afternoon progressed, Gareth returned to the fray with a new attempt on Pootank Pass. Complete success on the second attempt with a hardly detectable extra kilo of lead shot added to the 2091.

As the shadows lengthened, Ian steamed up his sublime Roundhouse "Lady Anne". A fantastic sounding loco which ascended Pootank with nary a backward glance. An exquisite loco in fact . So why on earth did he suggest that Dave should try driving it? :timeout:
Dave proved that you can tell always tell a true professional by consistent performance. I never knew you could get a loco to bounce high enough that all six wheels are in the air.....

A splendid day with great company, some fun locos and bags and bags of good humour. Ruritania salutes all those who travelled from far and wide to make it all possible.

LOL it was great fun. My best moment was when Dave look offended after I asked him if things were under control.... followed 3 seconds later by him removing all the hoppers from my train! also some lovely stuff on view - and i really liked the container train which to be fair wasn't really in it's comfort zone in Ruritainia

A Lovely visit to Ruritania,
A shame my train driving licence is now suspended on the Ruritania rail network. Personally I think the Permanent way engineers need to be given s decent wage to ensure track is up to the standard of visiting noble-men.

I still say I was sabotaged by Gareth to take pressure off his pootank pass failure.

If only I could have been there. Alas I was somewhere betrween Las Vegas and San Francisco at the time.
So was Dave I reckon Chris! :rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

The frivolity was so intense that, when Ian turned up slightly later than the rest of us, he was convinced we'd all been down the pub ...................... which we hadn't of course, because Peter doesn't even know where it is.:confused:

Crackin day on a crackin "network" though. Will stay in the memory for a long time...................... for show.:bigsmile:
