Excellent work, Henri. Exactly the way I build in the real world, stick by stick. By the way, what is the black material, looks like paint, on the joints ?

I have been wondering that too..

My guess is it is paint. To protect the 'cuts' from moisture getting in??

Henri, there is a product called Anchorseal. It's used by the lumber industry to protect the ends of milled boards. It is clear and can be applied with a brush. I don't know if the product is available where you are. But I'm sure something similar must be.

Aha! I see! I think this is for 'garden' wood as we call it in the Netherlands (Pressure treated timber).
The timer I use is not treated, just plain pinewood.

Scaffolding boards are extremely popular over here and I got some specific paint for this kind of timber. It is very 'thin' and impregnates into the timber. It is also slightly clear so the texture of the wood is still visible. I tried to look up the English word for this kind of 'paint' but the Google translate suggestions are pretty funny so I think it isn't correct. We call it 'Beits' and Google translates it into 'Pickle'. Yeah right!

One more note; Anchorseal has a waxy feel after it is applied.

Probably wont glue too well then!

Pickle is probably not far from correct, I believe one of the expressions in the old days used on the Railway was to Pickle Sleepers before they were used.
