It's impressive Richie, I can't believe its your first effort at a bash.
Well done. You'll be finished in the garage by the time the weater warms up though.

Cheers Dave I still can't believe how well my first bash is going have enjoyed every minute of the build it's taken alot longer than i first thought .

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Last few details to the Rotar housing before painting , a few bits of pipe detail made from old 00 scale bridge fencing not really sure what the pipes do they go round the housing ( would these be something like steam pipes to stop the Rotar from freezing up ?) . Also got the rotar blades bolted to the motor using a tap and dia set made it so the blades can be unbolted . For clearing the snow i will just use these blades but i'm thinking of making detailed blades to add on when the plow is static .

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Had ago at spray painting today started by spraying everything with red oxide primer ,once dry i covered the body shell with paper and sprayed the inside green and the boiler black satin , the only problem i had was the paint went funny on the boiler looks as if the paint has melted the old gloss paint under the primer ,justs looks as if the heat of the boiler has blistered the paint as it's inside i'm not to worried . Just need to add several more coats on the out side before adding lettering .

Richie,

Fantastic work! I've really been enjoying following this thread. Good stuff.

Looking at how the paint on the boiler behaved, I wonder if your primer hadn't cured long enough before you top-coated it. I had exactly the same problem recently, and that's what it turned out to be. I stripped, re-primered, WAITED A WEEK, and top-coated, and everything came out perfect.

FWIW,

Dawg

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

I just love the way that first coat of primer always transforms a collection of differnent bits into the model for the first time.

nice

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Many thanks for all the kind words , Can't believe how the model was transformed with the first coat of paint seems to have more detail than i thought . Heres a few shots put together before it has several more coats of red oxide .

Hi Dawg
The paint has only done this on one side when i put the boiler in the plow it can be seen through the windows so i think i will sand it back down and start again give the primer a chance to dry longer next time .

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Today i sanded down the paint on the boiler where the paint had gone funny and resprayed with primer . I also gave the body of the plow several more coats of Red Oxide primer , does any one know how long the primer should dry before i add the decals which rub on ? Is it hours or days as it dryed very quickly when i sprayed it a few hours ago .

Exactly right, but dont overdo the primer, dont lose the detail'

Hi Woderwick
Have sprayed a total of 3 coats of Red Oxide primer . I don't plan on putting on a top coat of paint as the plow is going to be Red Oxide in colour will just add decals and spray with a matt varnish once the paint is fully dry all the detail still seems to be there but many thanks for your concern this is all new to me this Spray painting .

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

That will be spot on mate, I also use red primer for thge last coat. Well done. The 2 on the back here are red primer.
