RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Started adding detail to the body work have used small copper round head nails cut down for rivits on side hatches , strap irons made by Back2bay6 nuts and bolts by Hartfords, metal angal plate from platic card and hand rails from a USAT Reefer , have finished the flanger and bolted it i place this was made from some old water pipes from work . It's now starting to look like a plow , few more details to add yet more hand rails and door handles . Will now start on the Rotar.

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Looking goooooood Richie. I am now definitely going to kitbash my USAT rotary. Are you going to have fixings to keep the roof down near the front?
Have you had any luck getting spare part rotor from USAT?

Hi Mike
Once finished the roof will be screwed back in place just loose at the moment does have a bit of a warp thou , Never did give USAT a buzz about the rotar thought that it would probably cost too much have just made a start on the rotar housing from a computer fan ,have added some handles and some more hand rails this afternoon will take some more pics soon .
Cheers Richie

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

By the way Mike did you say your plow came with sound if so what does it sound like and does it have the english sounding whistle ? May look at adding sound at a later date .

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Hi Richard,

The snowplows did have a different sound to their whistles so they could easily be differentiated from the pushing locos whistles. I have a recording off a video tape if you want it.

The size of it is 5.43KB, its not very good but it will give you an idea!  The tone in more mellow, not as deep as D&RG whistles I would say, but not a screamer.

Send me a PM with a direct e-mail address for you (its too big  to load up to the site!), and I will send it to you.

There is a preview on YouTube which has a different whistle(!!)  to the above (at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPwPcb7CBgo)  which is a very short clip!

And yet another whistle (this one quite English sounding!) on the following  -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhtJJn7GjVc

Yours Peter.

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Well.....it is just the sound of a steam engine and....well....it sort of is okay. The board was made by PH (I think Polk Hobbies) and was the first generation digital (or maybe last generation analogue) which is a bit noisy (spurious-wise)...which is no bad thing in this application as the boilers would wheeze and hiss without the more defined timing chuffs of a loco and no whistle. But it is nowhere like the phoenix one....but hey the price of that is a hell of an outlay for a rotary that might see the light of day a few times a year. But in your case....the great work on the kitbash might just warrant a purchase of a nice sound system to complete the total package......?

Have you seen these:

Hi Peter
Thanks for those clips , i do have a Mark one video Rio Grande Rotary Spectacular which i have watched several times now great sound effects with plow and 3 K-36 Pushing, was may be thinking of using a sound card that runs off track voltage so i can set the chuff to run fast at low track voltage with an english sounding whistle .
Regards Richie

Should be a little warmer in the shed this weekend Richie.
I am going to create some more auxiliary motorised rolling stock to add to my roster to help me with the grades. I have been taking part in a great discussion about gradients over on the Track laying thread forum. Although I have got good trains running on my grades using lash-ups and, traction tyres and auxiliary motorised rolling stock, I want more of a selection including more steam and they need help especially the Annies. So more small USAT motor blocks are on order from States possibly also some of that 'Bullfrog Snot' stuff.

Hi Mike
Has been a little warmer in the shed have got some more of the Rotar housing made .Have been watching the discussion on gradients How about this idea for adding motor blocks to tenders for more power , i have a O gauge Iniana Harbor Belt switcher which has auxiliary cylinders on the front truck for extra power for switching heavy loads not sure if many other locos had these .

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Some more up to date pics shows the start of the Rotar housing build made from plastic card alot of details yet to go on rivits and bolts + the rotar needs some teeth, have put on some more hand rails and small details next job to do will be the electrics and wiring for motor and lights .Have had no luck finding a Bachmann tender so Rio Grande No 9 may loose its tender .

Re:RIO GRANDE ROTARY SNOW PLOW OY

Hey Richie it is looking superb! I am a real fan of detail and yours is dripping with it. Did you get a reply from USAT about the rotor. I have found that if you phone them and talk to Mike (yet another one) in spares, they are really good about what is available.
I am looking at my USAT snow plow and thinking that it is a poor facsimile now. Very tempted to kitbash now...no..... must resist........got to push on with more motorized rolling stock ......and weathering, .......and figure painting, .......and wheel swapping,......... and building wooden kits and...................maybe next winter for the plow (plough to the purists!)

Richie I have a box of Delton Tenders her if you want a couple I'll put them in the post to you? it's just the deck and tender no trucks but it will give you a start and I think most of the rotary's that went out had double tenders?
