so what does the sign represent, please ? Puggsie

Puggsie? That's a new one, are you trying to get round me you old devil, you?
The answer above is correct, it means a biologically hazardous material, as opposed to nuclear (three triangles) or chemical load that is hazardous. I used the irritant material as an avatar when, I'm, er, irritating.
Best ask Mel, and ask him for that shot of the respiratory gear.

N.B. the more I look at your creation the more I think I've got some plumbing junk around....and I like yours, so some plagarism might be on the way  :D

Sorry, I should have been more specific, I can see what the warning sign for corrosive is, an actual pictorial representation of hole formed by acid type materials ( or alkaline etc)
flammable is a flame, I guess nuclear is an accepted randomly chosen symbol, is biohazard the same, or does it represent 'empty' or dead cells
I have never actually come across it in my working life, but next time I am in a hospital I will keep my eyes open!!

Good question, I'll have to ask.
The final paint job looks 'right' to me including the handwheel (yellow or red seem popular).

In an article in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_(journal) < Link To Science in 1967, the symbol was presented as the new standard for all biological hazards ("biohazards"). The article explained that over 40 symbols were drawn up by Dow artists, and all of the symbols investigated had to meet a number of criteria: "(i) striking in form in order to draw immediate attention; (ii) unique and unambiguous, in order not to be confused with symbols used for other purposes; (iii) quickly recognizable and easily recalled; (iv) easily stenciled; (v) symmetrical, in order to appear identical from all angles of approach; and (vi) acceptable to groups of varying ethnic backgrounds." The chosen scored the best on nationwide testing for memorability.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biohazard_sign#cite_note-5 < Link To [6][/sup]
