I just got a PIKO tarpaulin wagon (Shimmns) off eBay, #37709. It is not a bad representation of the prototype (37 80 4677 048-3) if you look at the two photos, but one thing glaringly missing is the yellow brake wheel. Does anyone have a suggestion from where I can get something similar, looks like a 6 spoke "concave" hand wheel? Doesn't have to be exactly the same, as I have seen other pictures of Shimmns with a 3 spoke "flat" wheel. I'm guessing it needs to be about 15 mm diameter.
Thanks, Dave.

Somewhat underwhelmed by any responses ( :) ), I did some more searching and found these from Cambrian Model Rail:

The large brake wheel at the end of the sprue is what I was looking for. Well not quite, I didn't want the handle, and it's not concave, but the size (about 15 mm) is about right.

I took the wagon apart and painted the opening handles and associated gear to match the handles moulded on the tarpaulin piece. Quite pleased with the colour match, a roughly 4:1 mix of Humbrol light grey matt #1 and black satin #85. The white marks on the wheel bearings are tiny pieces of white insulating tape. The brake wheels were superglued to a small brass rod and painted yellow. The shafts holding the tarpaulin hooks were also painted yellow. End result below.

I might paint the buffer beam orange - Humbrol #18 Orange gloss is a good match to the moulded plastic orange but I need matt. #46 Orange matt is a very different hue. #82 Orange Lining matt looks better in the Humbrol colour chart but that's not very reliable. I'll keep looking.

Sorry a regular user of Cambrian rivets n nuts but never noticed the wheels. Tend to make my own out of wire but the Cambrian ones look much better. Pity there are only 2 differing larger ones in the sprue.

Nice job, the extra detailing really makes a difference,

When you get a chance would you be able to post a few photos with the steel wagon next to various other g scale stock?

Considering buying a wagon but unsure how it compares sizewise

The PIKO tarp wagon is 486 mm long over buffers and 165 mm high (above rail top). The real Shimmns 708 is 12,040 mm long over buffers and 4,110 mm tall which gives a scale of just under 1:25 in both dimensions. Scale drawing in link below:

Here are a few pictures to compare with LGB narrow gauge wagons, 4063 and 4027.

As you can see the PIKO standard gauge wagon (1:25 scale) is taller that the LGB narrow gauge (approx 1:22.5 scale) wagons but that's what you would expect. However not so tall that it would look ridiculous running a train with both.

The tarp is removeable (just clips on) so you could use the same wagon with stakes to carry logs or pipes.

If you get one, they come factory shipped with 30 mm plastic wheel sets, so if you want to replace with metal wheels get 30 mm ones. I only mention this as many PIKO cars and wagons have 35 mm wheels.

Thanks Dan. My detailing efforts are extremely modest compared to many others on this forum but they are simple and if they inspire others I'm happy. When you get your rake take a few piccies please!

Just to complete this this, I received the Humbrol paints 46 matt orange and 82 matt orange lining and neither were a good match but an approximately 50:50 mix was pretty close. Job done.

What a fantastic model. You've done really well !
I noticed that Piko have done another version of the model, this time in Wascosa livery. Needless to say, I couldn't resist buying one from Tim at Arcadia :)
My tiny shunting layout is only 54" long, so I **should** just be shuffling the LGB tipper wagons around, but hey ho.....
