PIKO r/c conversion with sound?

Hi all! I'm doing a R/C battery power(20v dc) conversion on my Bachmann Annie. I have ordered a PIKO 35040 r/c loco reciever with remote. I'd like to add sound, such as cuff, bells and whistles. Since this will no longer be a dcc controled engine, will a PIKO 36221 sound kit work? I want to be able to control the bell and whistle from the remote, and not have them activated by a magnet on the track.

You can activate 2 sounds from the Piko RC. There are 2 outputs for sound, somewhere in here I have done a review and fit of the product.

This is a bit of waffle about them.

Have full look at the links on post#7 on this link

Here is a link to an older thread on MyLargeScale.. It concerns installation in a Piko, but some of the comments might be relevant to you?

You can go to the Piko website (or most dealers) and there will be a link to the manual from the product page.

Reading that link it looks like the My Loco Sound will be a better bet.

There are substantial advantages in installing a MyLocoSound universal steam soundcard compared with the Piko sound unit. Okay I'm biased but the facts are:
  • We include a choice of nine US whistles including recorded 3, 5 and 6 chime whistles. I am told that the Piko has only one.
  • We also have two different bells (brass or bronze), three different brake pumps, injectors, coal shovelling, "All aboard", brake squeal, safety valve, side rod clank and two chuff sounds. I understand that the Piko soundcard has one whistle and one bell plus the chuff.
  • The deep MyLocoSound chuff is adjustable to match the motion of the loco. A video on Youtube shows the Piko chuff to be way out of synchronisation with the loco.
  • The two function buttons on the Piko transmitter can trigger any two of whistle, bell, safety valve, injector/coal shovelling, "All aboard" and the brake pump. You select the two you want to trigger manually and the remaining four can be sounded automatically on a timed basis, loco motion or track magnets. Your choice.
  • The Piko sound kit, with speaker retails for US$135 with discounts available from some retailers. The MyLocoSound kit, including speaker, is US$121 from our American distributor G-Scale Graphics in Colorado.
  • Wth MyLocoSound, you can select the sounds you want using a Sony TV remote control. No programming.
There is a demonstration video at www.mylocosound.com. MyLocoSound runs on 7.2volts. The wiring diagram for the Piko radio control is attached.Wiring diagram - Piko.jpg

Peter, I know there are a number of sound cards on the market, and those that want more than bells and whistles, or more authentic sound may go elsewhere, but to my ears, the choice of engine sound (steam, diesel or electric), and the bells and whistles more than suit my needs, and the new premium MLS is superb, so it is MLS all the way for me (as a satisfied customer).
As an after thought, I did have an issue a couple of years ago and the after-service, including a phone call at local rates was much appreciated and solved my issue.

I'm another MLS satisfied customer. I've got around a dozen of them ranging from the earliest (not quite clockwork) version to the most recent with brake squeal and fireman re-stoking sounds. I like the way the safety valve sound kicks in at appropriate times on the newest version.

Just a quick question for Peter. I've just installed one on a loco with a chuff cam and am missing the coasting feature. Is that disabled for chuff cam or is there a setting I've missed?

Rik,

It should be there. I have a steam loco with chuff cam here (a Bachmann Lyn) which I use for testing and will check it out. Are you using the British steam or the Universal steam soundcard?

Hi Peter
British. And my loco is based on the Lyn motor block. I'll also give mine another tweak.

I checked it today on my Bachmann Lyn. When the loco is accelerating, the chuff is loudest. Twenty five seconds after it stops accelerating, the chuff softens a little into a coasting mode and stays there. If the loco accelerates again then the chuff gets louder again. If the loco slows then the chuff diminishes immediately to a soft sound.

I tested this with the current firmware version (21G) If your soundcard is not doing this then please advise the version number on the back of the soundcard and I will test again with that version.

Hi Peter
Yes, I get the increase and decrease in volume, but I don't seem to get the really quiet coasting sound when the loco comes to a halt which I get with voltage sensing.

I've tried tweaking the sensitivity setting but it doesn't seem to make any difference when a cam is used - again, unless I've not set it up correctly.

Rik

Rik,
I wonder if you are not running for long enough, or are not getting to a 'speed' threshold?

Just a thought?

Rik,

Are you able to give me the version number eg. 21G, on the back please? If not then the date of purchase would help.

Hi Phil
I've had her running in full sessions a couple of times - eg this video on my freight categories ( eg see 1m 50s).

Maybe, with all my tweaking, I've reset the sensitivity setting too high by accident. I'll give it another go.

Rik,

If you have done a lot of tweaking then It might be worth resetting the soundcard back to its factory defaults by holding down the TV remote zero key until you get five beeps. Then change the chuff back to the chuff cam.
