I have been building a new layout and was running Austrian. I have just packed that up to give the Saxon stock a bit of a run. The layout is a folded figure eight about 5 x 5.5 metres square In my double garage. I am in the process of building a purpose built room for my next layout. It willbe 14 x 7 metres and attached to the side of the house. Here are a few pics of the Saxon stock. All locos are the green LGB ones and a lot of the stock is scratch built by a guy here in NZ. 42A1FE99-8F50-4BC1-92AC-798CAB4E2F8C.jpeg

Wow. 14m x 7m is some shed. That's about the size of the ground floor of my house. That'll keep you busy for a few years.;)

Even the 'double garage' look's expansive, compared to things in the UK. - I believe we tend to have the smallest housing-stock? In Europe, at least?? :(

I have a layout planned for it very loosely based on some parts of the Steyrtalbahn.

The garage is a standard 6 x 6 metre building attached to the house. It also has another single garage attached to it for the car and a half workshop. I purchased the place for the garage spaces with the railway in mind.

In NZ we tend to have reasonable sized sections. Mine is larger than most at 1384m2 but is in keeping with most in the subdivision that I live in. My son lives in London so I have seen some pretty small back yards around the place.

Nothing short of ambitious! That's quite a project you have on your hands. Is it just you or have you got a team lined up? :)

Oooooh, you have the saxon conductors car. I am jealous! I very recently made an attempt to “model” one by using an ancient 3020 prehistoric unpainted LGB mail van and added a clerestory roof, and painted its window frames and bars yellow..it is vaguely identifiable as a conductor car, sans outside running boards and grab irons. And lettering.

i too have become enamored of the saxon trains. I have somehow gone from finding them too odd to really loving thier unique style. I have 2 k1’s,2 kiv’s, and a kii. your box cars are great

Your garage looks like a superb place to play. Love the carpeting under the ballast. Ill bet things run wonderfully quietly.

There are three of us in the area doing indoor shed based layouts. It is not the norm in NZ, most layouts are outdoor. Personally I just want access to the layout whenever I want to. My last layout was outdoor and it just took so much time to prepare it to run. This way I can walk out and run.

Like you, I have an indoor layout rather than an outdoor one so I can run it any time. For me it was not so much the prep time to run as the number of days in a year when I was prepared to stand outside in the cold, wind, rain or snow.

Some people ask me if you only run trains indoors why don't you choose a more sensible gauge/scale? I like the scale, size and majestic feel of G-scale stock, anything smaller seems puny and fiddly in comparison.

I do look forward to seeing your progress.
