"Now, do I turn the tops round for the ropes, or leave them square

Round would look good, but they are a bit big to go in my drill chuck""

'Never seen round tops in real life Don.

That should guarantee someone posting a picture '

Dons reply...
I have seen round tops, with steel bands just a couple inches down, around the top

But I cant remember where

And living in the Westcountry it could be anywhere of a thousand places

Posted by Doug..

Square wooden piles often have a turned round section at the top with a steel band round it. This is to allow the pile to be 'driven' without the top splitting. Most of this type of pile are oak so are as hard as steel.

Metal ladders are the way to go. Someone does a nice brass one about a foot long. I've several from GRS and from LinesideDelights. Not sure who actually makes them, might be Cambrian.

Some pics from the web of Veere, A Dutch harbour - has lots of wood piles (and wooden steps):

So took down wood,

Cut out the hole in wall for electric cable & water pipe for pump

& did not like the colour of the wood , not dark enough for my liking
