There is a 'road train. that runs from near the Minster to the NRM, free of charge.

But, they'll charge you a lazy quid for the trip back from NRM.

Too right. Well worth the effort to get there. Sort of knew what to expect, having seen heaps of photos and all that, but the actual experience of 'being there' was magic.

I think that is the one at NRM now. I believe only one survived the gas axe.

I worked at York in the Timetabling Section 1972 to around 76. During that time the Old Museum was closed and I got tye job of planning and Timetabling all the Stock out of the Old Museum and into the new. Fun project that got me into the Old Museum to do drawings of where everything was placed. The actual job of moving things out was pretty complex, but all in days work to the Railway Staff of the day. I was at the time a lowly clerk, these days I expect they would hire in Consultants an circa £100 an Hour to do the planning.

We stayed in York about 3 weeks ago and had a great time. The NRM was very busy and slightly disappointing. However the NYMR was amazing and well worth the traffic jams to get to Pickering. We will definitely return.

Whilst in York, we did a side trip to Manchester to visit Coronation Street. Next door, of course, is MOSI. So having some time to spare, we ducked in the main hall, then saw a sign that said steam. Enough said, over to the Steam and Railway Hall... fantastic. Even had their replica Planet running (the Beeb were supposed to be there doing a doco, but canned at the last minute, so they gave rides instead).
