New project - a flipboard for a station.

i decided to create a flipboard for my station. obviously a real mechanical one is out of the question - so has to be a just a glorified display.

So far i only built software prototype - but once hardware arrives i'll put it together.

How it will work can be seen here - but i will of course create a case, etc.

Nice thing - this display assembly has a sound card onboard and comes with speakers. I might explore a voice generation too. That's can make it even more interesting.

It also can run a web server and has wifi - so actual text and voice can be uploaded via wifi if I'll ever fancy to change configuration

Obviously software needs to be built - but i plan to use AI for that. The prototype i already have was almost entirely built by cGpt, and surprisingly - compiled and worked at first attempt..
 
Looks like just the thing for an iPad. Screens to add pages with a button to page forwards, page backwards or page number of a few?
When I'll build case and backend it'll won't be ipad looking. it is 2.8 inch screen - so I'll mount it in the station. there will be backend to control text, flipping speed, volume, etc. a maybe even API it to real Riga-Skulte line and update with actual data.
 
I like the look of it, but I can't help remembering the old mechanical versions at Waterloo and Victoria which, when a train left, and the board went blank, provided an almighty clatter that was just a part of the myriad of sounds in a busy London terminus.

Even the routes bring back nostalgic memories - this is Waterloo. And you can see at the bottom, the optional signs for 'rear portion'. No need to describe the number of carriages, as the greater part were 4 car EMUs, mostly running as 8 car trains with some as 12 car formations in those days.

I notice two cemetery trains and a mortuary platform.

Waterloo's Necropolis Railway to Brookwood cemetery did not survive the London Blitz :shake:

well, i only have 2.8 inches of display space and 12 columns and 6 rows - so it won't be that impressive :)
 
Yes, I have some long-gone rellies buried at the Woronora Cemetery south of Sydney (about an hour out of town).
Hmm, more rellies are also planted in Rookwood as well! At least I have visited all the ones I know about :angel:

And the Rookwood Cemetery was very popular (so to speak). There was a mortuary station in the city - "Regent Street Railway Station" and a 'Receiving Station' in the Rookwood Cemetery. The one in the cemetery was pulled down and rebuilt into a church in Canberra - "All Saints Anglican Church".

I have an MTH reproduction of a Lionel accessory from the '50s. Many years ago I had ITTC sounds make me a sound module that I used for one of the stations in my garden railway. I had forgotten about it until recently while going through my parts bins.

 
Small update from Jaungauja Line.

I had an idea to make a tiny split-flap style departure board for my G scale station. It started as simple Python prototype, just to see if it can look right. Six rows, Latvian text, flipping animation, and permanent MIND THE GAP line (that my homage to England, despite we don't do mind the gap in Latvia ).

Then it somehow become real hardware project.

Board is Waveshare ESP32-S3 with 2.8" 240x320 screen. All software development was done by ChatGPT. I only provided prompts, requirements, testing feedback, hardware info and real split-flap sound assets. ChatGPT generated the simulator, Arduino firmware, graphics, animation, sound playback, Wi-Fi, NTP time sync, web admin page and fake timetable logic.

I tested each version on real board and reported what worked or failed. There were few disasters, including sound playing forever like haunted railway office, but eventually it all worked.

Now board has:

  • split-flap style animation
  • real clack sound synced with flips
  • Wi-Fi and current time
  • phone-friendly admin page
  • sound, volume, brightness and speed controls
  • fictional but believable Jaungauja timetable
It does not use live railway data. I used real ViVi Riga-Skulte route as inspiration, then made believable departures from Gauja towards Riga or Skulte. So it looks real enough, but does not need internet timetable every time.

Software side is basically finished now. Next step is enclosure: removable case on dovetail baseplate, PSU hidden inside station building, only USB-C cable to the sign.

It become much more complex than expected, but that is the fun part. Not just a screen on layout, but something that feels like it belongs there.

Yeah these tiny screens come in different shapes and sizes, there are round ones too. Prices vary £20-50. All share pretty much same computing hardware - and with modern AI it is surprisingly easy to implement any ideas. I have IT background and know C++, so probably could pull this off without AI - but that'll be 100+ hours project. I spent maybe 7-8h total mostly testing and writing prompts - haven't changed a line of code. I agree - the AI generated code sometimes is questionable - but as long as it works - i don't care how beautiful or efficient it is. It is not a nuclear power plant - just a tiny screen

Brings back memories. We used to get the train to Portsmouth as a family…. But …. If the train was a stopper it divided at Woking with part going to Alton and the rest going to pompi .
There were one or two occasions when there was a panic and run along the platform at Woking to get the right portion!

I probably will create GitHub for Jaungauja - so people can download BOMs, drawing and code. It is easy to amend this to display any timetable as long as station name fits 12 characters
