New depot for Los Garargos so far

Riograndad

Model Railroading, boats and oil painting,
Country flag
Los Garagos needs a new bigger depot, this was a job I was saving for the winter but while over at Glendale I picked up some roofing slate molding sheet and as was flimsy and a little fragile I decided to shelve the Connie mods(still have Field loco, oil depot and also a Delton caboose to finish:whew:) and start the new depot,I used the normal scribed plasticard wood effect for the walls and frames, new depot 001.jpg the whole thing was sprayed with dark brown, then all the frames were masked out and then sand was lightly sprayed over to get the final colour but allows the base colour to "bleed" through just slightly,Before the glazing went in the inner walls were cut to size and the window openings marked and cut out,the glaze and the inner walls are all 40thou plasticard/clear and the glaze was cut to fit the openings so the inside window frames fit flush and the inner edge of the frames hold the glaze in place, experience has proved that glaze falls out if just glued in place if buildings left out all year as mine are,the roof tiles then added, laminated with 40 plasticard for strength together with internal supports with a coat of dark grey, still loads to do,second coat roof and tidy paintwork, smoke jack(s)stove, floor, blinds, internal fittings and furniture and some figures etc,the depot name boards will come from the old building,as for the original depot,,,to be moved and converted to another use.new depot 004.jpg

A little more done, working on the interior, stove and some furniture made up and some of the figures to be used on test fit,now xmas over with can get some more done,I think the people need a repaint and the wood sections on the sofas etc should end up looking like varnished mahogany but at least made a start.interior 022.jpg interior 025.jpg interior 027.jpg

Fantastic piece of work.
Thanks Greg, still lots to do,next job will be more furniture(low table, coal bunker etc)and some hand painted pictures for the walls,as the internal walls are only an interference fit at the moment they can be removed at will, pics, blinds and any more details can be added before the walls attached properly. The whole building will then sit on a loose floor so can be picked up for easy access, once the furniture and freight in the other end is glued in place on the floor against the internal walls, the top can be taken off and replaced in exactly the same position every time.I used this technique on the original depot and it works fine.As there appears to be no running water an outside jon nearby is on the cards(i have the Prehm figure sitting already:tmi:)to finish it off.

Powell and Mason. Happy memories too. Within 2 hours of first touching down in the USA, I was riding that line. Less than 24 hours later, I was in prison..... Alcatraz.
Great fan of the San Fran cables, studied them in depth, fascinating.

Two consecutive photos from my camera, both taken on the same day, 2 September 2009, the first is in Wellington NZ, at 10am, and the next in San Francisco, at 2 pm.
Eastbound travel across the International date Line enabled this to happen.

Memory bank has just realised that today is not a Bank Holiday..... them people, I got mine from Chans Trains down on Van Ness Ave in SF. Then, walked up (and I mean uphill) Union St. 3-4 blocks to get a Hyde St Cable, only to find the line temporarily shut down due to a fault on the Hyde cable... so, I walked the route exploring. Found an interesting junction setup at Jackson and Hyde, as well as the feeder line along to the California St line.

I will try to explain. First thing to remember, is that they drive on the wrong side of the road (that's why they have so many accidents).

In the bottom photo, we are standing on Hyde St, between Washington and Jackson, looking back towards the city. Two tracks, each sharing the same middle rail. Left hand track is the main running route,
which turns off to go up Washington, and on past the powerhouse to the city. The continuation of the left hand track quickly veers back to the other side of the road. This is used for Van Ness cars returning to the powerhouse. The cars come towards the camera, drift against the flow of traffic, then stop, take cable, and whip up around the corner to the depot. The right hand track is related to the top photo. It is used by the Van Ness cars to access that line.

Top photo is looking the other way, back down nearer Jackson. track on the right is the main route from city, and depot towards Hyde Terminus. Hyde cars go straight ahead. Van Ness cars going into service use the turnout, cross over the main city bound Hyde line, and onto a dead end track that shares the middle rail as in the bottom photo. They drift across this, stop, take cable in reverse to head back along Hyde to what is the right hand track in the bottom photo.

DSCF1767.JPG

and this is where the access line joins California St. Before the present system was 'established' in 1957, this used to be just a straight 90° crossing, with Hyde St cars heading on into the city via a seperate route.
The old Hyde line used the same/similar cars as are now run on California St. and the depot for those lines was that vacant lot in the photo (I didn't know that when I took the picture).
Cars going out of service go right to left on the far track, let go, and drift back through a crossover to take rope on the left foreground track. Cars oing into service drift right.

Thanks Gavin for the insight and information, great post but you have me thinking now,was mine Hyde and Powell or Mason, memory a little foggy but somewhere I have an old cassette video of one of the trips from begining to end hanging on the outside,(as you do)must find it and check,,,as for Chan`s on Van Ness I found it by accident as we were staying in the Vagabond Hotel (now renamed)about a block away, looking for lunch and leaving the car behind just happened accross it,,,,came out with a loco and about 10 freight cars"HO",still have them somewhere:pThree floors as i remember?awesome store,The other way of getting around was the buses built like cable cars, hop on hop off at the various sites on one ticket or stay on for the duration, interesting trip as was shown some of the Bullitt and Mrs Doubtfire film locations en route as well as the normal sites of interest, a few hours well spent and no parking problems;););)think they started from Union Square?I have been 3 times and always found a warm and freindly welcome, great city and happy times, and remember to turn your wheels to the kerb when you park the car!!!!!:h::h:certainly left my heart there.!

Ditto, three times as well. Best value was the MUNI Passport....one day, three days, or a week on all the buses, trams, light rail (but BARTexcluded). My favourite US city.

Powell and Mason. Powell at Market St., Powell, Jackson, Mason, Columbus, Taylor to Bay and Taylor.
Powell and Hyde. Powell at Market St., Powell, Jackson, Hyde to Hyde and Beach.

Coming back, both lines use Washington, rather than Jackson. Powerhouse is on Mason, between Washington and Jackson.

DSCF0394.JPG

Hyde car coming down Washington, at Mason. Powerhouse to the right of shot. look carefully back of second auto, and you will see track coming out of Car Barn. All San Francisco cable cars enter service through this track. They drift out on to the main and then take rope. When it is sleep time, they all go up Jackson, drop rope, and drift back into the other side of the barn with a similar trailing track.

The Mason, and Hyde, cars are interchangable. The destination signs on the apron are 'split screen', undo the clip and the top half folds over to reveal the other route. The signs on the roof roll 180° to allow choice of display.

Yet more great info and pic, thanks for posting,I would love to go back as 2nd Swmbo has never been to the US,almost everywhere else but never there,,,,and of course visit my friends in Phoenix(love Arizona)its on the bucket list at least:cool::cool:,one thing i remember is when driving up and down the hills(not around them)is to remember the location of the parked cars/road layout across the junction as all you can see is the end of the hood and the bay!!! and of course obeying the stop signs,Oh happy days:clap::clap:,,,,getting back to the depot thread I hope to post a few pics of the interior tomorrow of progress so far as a little more done.

A little more done to the interior, small table and fuel box made,I was going to fill with coal but on second thoughts it will probably be a wood burning stove, the mahogany colour on the furiture has had a second coat and awaiting varnish and the upholstery needs tidying too. i want some other details on the table, such as an ashtray(different times)and magazines,I still have to make some pics for the walls while they are still removable and blinds for the windows. The little desk for the freight end of the depot now under construction with its ledger books, blotter and pens etc and once the glues have dried can tidy it all up,all laid in place at present until final placings decided,It will stand next to the door on the internal centre wall with some clipboards hanging on the wall above, some racking and freight items still to sort out for this end,the chair for the desk will be a dolls house item from the scrapbox,oh and smoke jack for the roof to do.The Station Agent(Bachmann item)the external bench and name boards from the old depot will be reused and not forgetting something for it to stand on and suppose will have to see how to light it up!intereior 2 004.jpg intereior 2 005.jpg

Clever!
What have you used for the upholstery please?

TIA,

Well Phil, they may be a little hard to sit on,00 BRICKS:p:p:p:p,i had a few scraps of sheet left from a project on my 009 layout so thought i would experiment to look like textured material, the roll fronts and back melted and bent with a lighter,on the chesterfield style sofa its plain plasticard to represent leather/ette and the roll arms are a couple of ridge tiles from the roofing sheet on the building....throw nuffin away;);).The armrests will need some more smoothing before second coat, the furniture frames are leftover 00 boarding sheet and today added the smoke jack, started the racking and picture frames but not worth a pic yet.Hope to do so more over the weekend and with any luck can post almost completed soon!!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Rio thinking got to finish Connie, caboose and field loco,,need more plastic:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Ah-Ha! Yes, I see it now.. had wondered if the upholstery was an embossed paper-towel of some sort. - Possibly varnished to give some strength..
Thanks for sharing..
PhilP.
