I have been working on making a motor block. Right now I am thinking of using a Carrera 18v slot car motor because they are small and I have some. Options I'm looking at are 1/8" axle with crown and pinion or worm and gear or using USA trains wheels that have split gears and replacing them with a printed crown gear. Whether either will work or if the idea is even folly is not of immediate concern to me. In any event I am printing different gears to try out. I'm doing them in PLA, but will use ABS if I find something that works. I mention this because gears are straightforward with 3D printing but would be hard to fabricate without machining equipment.
Earlier, since I could not find a proper sized worm to replace a worn one in a USA motor block, I printed a PLA worm that fit. It worked. How durable it would be even in ABS is unknown, but when I get my printer loaded with ABS I will try it to see.
