Hi All I need some help sourcing some replacement parts, I received a couple of Aristocraft locos for repair the other day an E8 and a RS3. I am having a lot of trouble sourcing parts for the E8 the guy who runs them said its a bit jerky!!! its a wonder it moved at all (see Photos) Im prepared to look at all options from complete motor block replacement to spare axles and gears just depends what I can get it is aristocraft after all.DSC_0129.JPGDSC_0131.JPGDSC_0133.JPG
as you can see its in a pretty sad way its almost impossible to get spare over here so if you know someone or somewhere it could get them it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Alan

Given that the housings look to be OK, it would be worth investigating if somebody could machine replacement gears, particularly as there's more than one to do.

You could try contacting ABC gears - they're primarily O gauge and Gauge 1, but I have one of their gearboxes in a loco, and they made a one-off mount to fix it to my pre-purchased motor.

You'd end up with a brass worm and brass drive gear.

Somebody has started to produce 3D printed parts for Aristo, but they're only body parts, no real mechanical stuff, I think.

I always take the view that model train companies are unlikely to use really weird/non-standard gear and worm sizes, so if you take accurate measurements and count the teeth, work out the Module value etc., you should to find suitable replacements. There may be components from the RC car world, robotics etc., that will fit.

In the past I've replaced G scale gears using parts from
motionco

I use Mikroantriebe for replacements for my tiny N scale models, they're a great firm but I don't know if they'd supply larger sizes though.
Mikroantriebe by KK Produkcja. Microgears, Wormgears, Micromotors and RC Equipment.

I had a look at the 3D printed stuff today youre right nothing Mechanical however if it comes to it I could draw up the gears and axles and get them printed in brass at Shapeways the cost could be high though

Thanks for the tip on motionco interesting site doesn't look like they have anything for this job but could be very useful when i'm building my next gearbox

The gearbox that the original poster needs is Aristocraft's prime mover steam loco jobbies which are different to the diesel ones
But having a source for Aristocraft diesel gearboxes is good too.
Can you post the link to the Bachmann page Wayne?

bachmann on line home page, parts, large parts, eggliner power block. also on same page gear axle for steamers.

Thanks for the tip Wayne the guy who has asked me to repair the loco has stated he doesn't want to pay more then $100.00 to do repairs i don't think he has a real grasp on what is involved. However I have been able to bodge 2 good gearboxes together from the 6 and the loco runs, whether it pulls a load is another matter.
Again thanks for all the advice its always useful to learn where people get things.

No chance, you should get new gearboxes. Good think they are all the same. These gearboxes are very sturdy, but often electrical issues will power down one block and drag the other one and destroy it.

But there's a bigger clue to what has happened: the grooves in the metal halfshafts show that they were not lubricated, so did not slide side to side.

Without lubrication, the ball bearing that rides on the axle for power pickup will wear a groove in the axle and now the side to side motion through turns is impossible. Total destruction comes soon.

People don't realize that the axles MUST slide side to side and require periodic lubrication, especially if left outdoors overnight.

That ball you see at the end of the spring is what wore the grooves in the axle, and locked it.
