Need Help Identifying Freight Car

Hi there! I'm a new member here and I'd love to use to experience and expertise of this forum to get some help.

A few years ago I bought a set of some amazingly-detailed freight cars (perhaps hand-assembled, handmade?) These cars are heavy with spring-loaded metal trucks, brass wheels, and metal accent pieces. They each came in their own cardboard box complete with custom foam cutouts.

I'd love some help identifying the company that made these, or really in getting any additional information on these freight cars whatsoever. The only markings anywhere on the cars and boxes are "Made in West Germany" (on the cars and boxes) and the number "9201" on the boxes.

Has anyone seen these before? Thanks in advance for any information!

Believe they were sold at least in the USA back in the early 80ths a lot of hobby shops had them also had tank car , flat cars , box cars and cabooses all made out of wood, wish I had bought some back in the day, Bill
 
As they're marked Made in Germany I got somewhere close by googling for "Spur IIm 9201". It came up with this auction listing page which would seem to indicate they were made by SMW - but I've not tracked down any details of that firm or make yet... Unless SMW is an auction house abbreviation for something other than a maker...?

Bingo! Thank you! The pictures in the auction definitely show the same gondola car that I have so I'll do some more research on SMW. Great find!
 
Nice find!

It mentions " Made in West Germany" so you can date the production date before late 1990.
From 1949 Germany was divided in West and East Germany. East Germany was a social democratic republic (DDR) and a Warsawpact member, orientated to the USSR. West Germany was western European orieantated and part of NATO.
In 1989 started what is called "Wende" (the change) in East Germany which resulted in a reunification of both countries in 1990. October 3th 1990 is the official date of the "Wiedervereinigung"; East and West Germany became 1 nation again.
Before that it was very common to mention if a product was produced in West or East Germany.

So that car is almost 30 years old at minimum.

BTW: Old Fleischmann stock even have "Made in US Zone - Germany" markings; it was produced between 1945 -1949 in the US part of the allied occupied Germany.

That was history class for today ;-)
 
I think I can help you, in the beginning of the 80th I produced these Models by myself an took them to the World Fai rat Nuremburg.
Later on I realised that it cannot be for a Living.
Than I was responsible for unemployd young people. So these cars of mine were produced by them.
That is your car because I have still some originals modells of mine and parts they have produced under my authority.

That is interesting Kurt! Must be funny thing you see your models here and one showing up in San Diego... Than these are truly nice collectors items! I was searching the internet for more info on it but could not find much.
Were does SMW stand for?
 
The exact same cars were sold in the USA by 'Model Power' Walthers Catalog 1989.

Hallo Paulus, we are moving from Tenerife to Germany at the moment, all things were packt for the container, so I can't give You any Pictures but if You like theese cars I have a lot to sale, they are original from my build with stamps printed at the bottom. When I be at our new home I try to find the original flyer in german and I will send a copy.

Unfortunately, we were 'taught' French..
So that is not a lot of help. - He shrugs, a Gauloise hanging from his lip.. :(:rolleyes::shake:
