My take on a Coffee Pot

3 minutes of fame

3d printing, electronics and trams

It was a slow bank holiday weekend, so I spent it designing and printing my take on a De-Winton Pepper Pot.

It's 32mm (yes, I'm sorry, my 45mm garden railway is currently being rebuilt) and motorised, with working motion driven off an eccentric on the axle. It will have a Locoremote controller and 3.7v battery, and will chug around my little exhibition layout once detailed and painted.

It's a really simple print, and I'll post it up on Thingiverse. If there's enough interest, I'll consider a 45mm version, as it wouldn't be a huge job to rescale it.

Could you please tell the size of your print bed, number of pieces and total print time?
I run 7/8 on 45mm so time would be much greater. Scaling is fun, there is always a part that won't fit.
Thanks.

Excellent. A de Winton has been on my to-do for ages, if you do a 45mm version I'd be very interested. If not, I'll have a go at making a 45mm chassis for it.

Thank you for the kind comments.
Files for the 32mm gauge version are here: De-Winton Coffee Pot Loco in 32mm gauge, 16mm / foot by noiseboy72

The loco and my little layout should be at Loughborough Model Railway Exhibition on 17 & 18 August, where I'll have a few other interesting little locos, such as this Simplex, designs by Bblr.

Hi
I downloaded the files and have tried slicing them in Cura. However, every time I try slicing the body , Cura gets about half way through slicing it and then throws up an error and stops slicing. I've separated the cylinder from the main body and the cylinder slices OK, but the main body still keeps hitting a problem at about the half way point.

Has anyone else encountered a problem?

I'll try downloading the files from Thingiverse again, just in case there was a glitch during the download.

Rik

Tried downloading the files again and ran into exactly the same problem with trying to slice the body.

I tried cutting the main body in half horizontally at about the half way point. The top half printed ok but I ran into the same problem with the lower half.

I've now cut the body into three sections vertically and they all now slice ok. I've not printed them, so haven't been able to check their integrity. I'll keep you posted.

I've redesigned the chassis for 45 mm gauge with inside frames and 3mm axles in unbushed holes. I'll tinker with it to figure out a way to mount the motor then post it as a remake on Thingiverse.

Excellent, nice work! This is the (almost) finished final 32mm version, and I might well build your 45mm version as well.1000012583.jpg

I rescaled to 7/8ths and 45mm with no problems. Some redundant triangles were found in the chassis(342), crank(488) & eccentric(1124). The motor mount has1128 redundant triangles and 8 open edges which I didn't use anyway.
Just went back and sliced all the files with Cura 5.3.0 with no errors being shown. Updated to Cura 5.7.2, sliced ok.

Thanks for all the replies and re-mixes. I think one thing this shows is that Microsoft 3D builder is not great for complex shapes, even if it's useful for quick and dirty creation. I really must get myself a decent design package and take the time to learn it!

Interesting. Did you mend the files before you sliced them and did you rescale in Cura?

Just checked and I've been using version 4.11.0 of Cura. I'll update and try again

Just installed Cura 5.3.1 and that file sliced ok. I tried installing the latest version of Cura (5.7.2) and was told it wasn't compatible with my computer - which is strange as it was bought last year and has Windows 11 Home edition

I tried modifying the loco to 3' gauge but wasn't happy with the outcome

So I started again from scratch, basing the model on Watkins, the three foot de Winton in the foyer at Caernarfon Station.

It took a few weeks of trial and error tinkering to get everything to work and to cram the batteries, receiver, soundcard and speaker in, but this morning she had her first test run

I'm now printing out version 2. Which corrects most of the mistakes I made on this version.

Nice job!
Could you let me have the stls for the regulator and whistle etc. I'd like to add them to my model.

Sure. I'm going to post all the files on the gardenrails.org forum eventually (when I've checked them all by building version 2), but next time I fire up the laptop, I'll post those STLs on here for you.

Let me know if there are any problems with them

PS - Not done a whistle (yet)
