I found the best technique was to drill small holes all around the apertures and then tidy it up with a sharp craft knife.

Thank you for these Keith, The windows I worry about are the tiny ones on the cab front. Drilling those out without scraping the chuck down the side of the bonnet is something I fear may be beyond me. I will have a think. My old Dremel has a cable drive, that may work. I wonder what the chances of Bachmann supplying a spare body are? 0%?

Edit: I have just looked at the destructions and it seems you are able to split the cab off from the bonnet. A classic case of RTFI. Investigating.

I didn't RTFI and still managed to drill them out without damaging the bonnet.
I would caution against using a Dremel as even at low speed the plastic melts. My battery drill allowed me to drill very slowly and so there was no melting.
 
First coat of primer went on the 08ish yesterday.

There are still a good number of jobs to do on it later: Cab handrails, sandboxes, possibly springs, new conrods, sort out the windows, cab details, additional doors on the other side where a mystery rectangular raised bit is, air receivers under the front, the shunters ride on at the front steps, the big bonnet handrails. But it will do for now. Its good I found that I can split the cab off, theis makes it far easier to work on. For now, it will be painted, lights installed and reassembled for work.

Heres a soft focus photo. Painting it removes the toy like shininess of it which is nice. Final colour will be Matt Black ("like the night") Perhaps some Letraset (tm) numbers. I thought 11111.

OK I'm calling my little trainset finished for now. The factory is still to be completed though. So heres an explaination of its route.


i) Exiting new yard, otherwise known as "the rest of the world".

Those tankers are a job to be proud of, and I like the way you constructing the low relief building inside.

Klondike Sidings? I guess Mrs Miggins thinks her trifles will turn out to be a little gold mine for her.

Thank you, I am really pleased with them. As for the Klondyke moniker, Its what the lads called the stores where I first started work as an apprentice at Herbert Morris in Loughborough. Because, if you actually managed to get anything out of there it was like Gold.

<ramble> Actually, in Loughborough, there were four big employers, Fisons (fertilizer/pharma), Cottons (knitting/hosiery machines), Morris (mechanical handling/cranes/linear motors) and the Brush (everything heavy electrical). Fisons is, I think still in Loughborough as part of Astra Zenica, Cottons is a housing estate, and the other two are much depleted. The Linear Motors factory in Loughborough is also a housing estate.</ramble>
 
Slow progress on the trifle factory. The two sections are just leant on the base of the building for the photos. It looks a bit bright now but when it is painted, hopefully it will look really grim (think 1970s Cumbernauld)
