hello
i'm looking for a digital chip from massoth that has sound for the above locomotive.
If anybody can point me in the right direction to find one of these i would be very greatful
Cheers phil

Phil,

I am not aware that Massoth do specific sounds for this type of loco - its a HGe 2/2.

I doubt that they will either as I understand that none of them exist to take samples from.

Think the LGB generic electric is probably best

I thought you can program the massoth chips with any sounds so might be a case of mix and match?

They can only be reprogrammed to sounds provided by Massoth.

Whoops silly me but at least iknow now...

You can listen to samples of most of the available Massoth sounds on their website, albeit with some slightly annoying background music over them (which I assume is there to prevent people nicking the sound samples!). Best to listen to the various electric loco options and choose the one you think fits best for your loco. Although the Massoth LS is only listed in 3 types - generic Steam, Diesel and Electric - it can actually be programmed with any of the sounds from the range listed for the bigger XLS - Jeremy at Dragon can do this for you if you buy the chip from him, and several other stockists will do it too.

There is another option a XL chip with a separate sound unit like Deitz using the susi interface

Another option is the Phoenix Sound (http://www.phoenixsound.com/ < Link To www.phoenixsound.com) ERACK decoder - one thing to remember is that this is only a sound decoder and needs to be wired into a motor decoder as well.

I've got one fitted in my Schollenbahn rack loco - it even has the rack sounds recorded. Installation was done by the sadly-departed John Powers of Hobbybahn. Maybe one day I'll take the loco apart and see how he did the installation so that I can copycat it for the FO loco......

The current Phoenix card for this type of application is their P8. As this was only introduced in early 2010 it is unlikely that John used one of these in your loco, so there may be a few detail differences between your present installation and any future ones.
Please don't let this put you off though, IMHO Phoenix systems are excellent, easy to install, have excellent documentation and backup. The only downside is that they tend to be a little pricey over here.

A good suggestion, but just a word of caution if you go this route - make sure when you buy your XL decoder that it is new stock with the SUSI socket - as far as I know these have only been added to Massoth decoders quite recently, and I know from personal experience* that some stockists have units that have been on the shelf for a while and though still "new" items, can actually be several years old! It's quite understandable if turnover of a particular item is slow, but it's worth being aware of this, to just ask and make sure that what you're buying actually has all the latest features and isn't an older model.

* Basically, the first Massoth XLS I bought and installed was fine, until a little while later I wanted to put an external volume control on it and found there was no socket for one - it was only then that I did a bit of digging and found that the unit I'd been sold was a generation behind the current versions.....

There are a few of these (or similar loco's) in existence. The Val De Nuria in Spain has at lease on in the Museum with possibly another for occasional use. Also the Monsterat Line (also in Spain) has one that I think is used for odd access up the Mountain, probably for PW use but it has been restored though not originally from this line. I think that there are very similar machines in both France and still some in Switzerland.

For Sound, I would recommend the RHB Railcar Sound, this is a very grindy sort of noise that would fit these little beasts much better than the LGB Generic Sound Box.

Hope this helps.
