Live Diesel

Live Steam, Live Diesel
Here's the first run of the newly completed diesel from November.

The loco about three years to build. It's got electric fans to keep the motor cool. The fuel tank lasts about 15 minutes and is topped up with the engine running. Most of the oil in the fuel is caught by the huge silencer and drained to the ballast. The primary gearbox takes real car oil :) There's a 3 speed gearbox: 5 mph, 10 mph, 15 mph. The loco runs at engine idle speed.

Best wishes,
Dave

Lovely speed control. A great job.

After all that turkey and brussell sprouts, even I don't meet the EU standards on emissions.

Would love to see the inside and Start Up Routine if that could be arranged. Whilst I have little desire to have a beast like this, I am always in awe of the Effort and Technology that goes into them. With the fans et all, there must have been some advances since the Pilgrim days to Shoe Horn it all in.

Magnificent Beast and so very regal in running as are all of these types that I have seen in motion.

Wonderful. By far the best I have seen. Would you be able to give details? What engine? How did you silence the exhaust so well?

Thank you chaps. It's 1" scale. The engine is OS FS 26 pull start car engine. The exhaust enters a huge 200 mL chamber and expands, there's no baffles. The exhaust flow out of the stack is quite cold.

I wish a manufacturer would commit to live diesel. Diesel electric is easier, a conveniently sized motor module could power an existing electric powered model.

Here's a build log for the loco, showing the frustrating first start of the engine, and early first chassis. All the under cover photo's are contained:
