LGB STAINZ - Stripping and Chipping!

I thought I'd show how I fitted a 55021 decoder to my Stainz.

Thanks to Steve the Meerkat for the chip, and Zerogee for the written instructions.

First job is to remove the snow ploughs and couplings....

It's a good idea to remove these small screws which attach the con rods to the coal bunkers first of all.

The screwdriver points to where these screws are....

I took off the steps and the 4 screws underneath that hold the cab onto the footplate....

Unplug all the piping from the boiler to the cylynders and footplate.

On the right hand side is the brake compressor, that is attached on with a single screw (looks like a single cylinder motorcycle engine!), which I also removed.

Remove the 2 screws under where the couplings are mounted, front and back, and you should be able to carefully move the chassis from the boiler, but pay attention to the cable assembly which links them together. This cable can be unplugged from the chassis once you have access to it....

My version is fitted with a smoke unit, which just happened to have a loose nut that should have been securing it!

Undo the nut and carefully remove the 2 wires which have 'push on' connections to the pcb inside the boiler....

I carefully removed the cab controls bulkhead and disconnected the 2 plugs to the pcb....

You should now be able to see the weight in the boiler at the front, where the chimney and smoke unit go, and the bottom of the boiler. In the 3rd photo I've shown where the release 'clip' is with the screw driver.

I pulled gently at the floor at the chimney end and then carefully prised off the back, where the 'clips' are....

You should now have the PCB and weight out of the boiler as shown.

The 6 DIL switches will need to be changed to the opposite setting to that shown here. This can also be done after assembly if you take the square cap shown off the top of the boiler....

I used the LGB 55021 decoder, which I brought from Steve the Kat.

It's a simple plug in fit onto the main PCB, but you have to align the pins carefully....

Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly, as they say in the Haynes manual!

Refit the PCB with weight into the boiler, and connect up the cables to the PCB when you refit the back head....

Fit the floor pan to the cab and boiler, fitting the screws and steps.

Refit the chassis block to the body, not forgetting the plug, reinstate all pipe work and the vertical motion rods to the cab.

I programmed mine to address 2, remembering to change over those DIL switches mentioned earlier of course!

Tested and running in MTS mode....

Rather than hi-jack Tim O'Brien's thread which requested advice about fitting a decoder to a Stainz, I will continue here.

Mike Silky asked if the Head and Tail lights were still directional after fitting the LGB 55021 decoder. I tested mine on the layout and I had no lights. I couldn't select them on either using the '9' key , using my Universal Remote.

Having installed the decoder to my Stainz, the only thing I did was change the address to 2.

Last year, I brought a LGB 55045 Decoder Programmer from the Stainzmaster, but I hadn't got around to trying it out, so following Mike's question, I read out the CV values.

CV 52/53 are the settings for direction and these were set correctly for 128 & 64 respectively. However CVs 49/50 are for the lamp voltage settings, 5 for 5 V lamps and 26 for 19 V lamps.

I may have blown my lamps as the setting was 32, but I've now changed it to a value of 5.

However, I've now run out of time to continue further, as I'll be getting ready for work soon, so I'll post the results here, as and when I get around to checking the loco on the layout....

Is there any space inside the older pre-digital Stainz locomotives where a decoder will fit (except the boiler)?

If you use a decoder from another manufacturer, say a Digitrax or the like, then you can find space.. Basically, using a small-scale decoder.
