LGB Aster 22832 Mallet

I should say I would dearly love it but at that price I need to think at least twice. I think they were about €3,500 new.
 
A good spot, Dave - not too bad a price, about what I'd expect for a near-mint one - though I've seen them asking up to about £2500. I was lucky enough to get mine from a commission sale by Glendale, haggled a little via Brian and the seller accepted an offer of £1800.

Go on.... you KNOW you deserve it..... :rofl:

If it bothers you as far as I can tell it looks like the wooden box in this ebay item is a home made (albeit well made) box not the official LGB/Aster wooden box with brass trimmings and name plate. Perhaps a lucky owner of one can confirm.

Hmmm, yes, looks like you're right - that is not the correct wooden box..... the proper one has a brass plate printed with the serial number of the model (mine is no.250).
I would think that should drop a decent bit off the value! In my experience Rails are quite reasonable at accepting offers, provided they are not so low that it looks like you're taking the p*ss - give it a try..... ;)

The locomotive is the black version as illustrated in the first post. I paid 1899.00 Euros

I have kept copies of the bank transfer, order acknowledgement and relevant emails. His reference for the transaction is “ Rechnung Nr.: 281064 Kunden-Nr 258834962"dated November 3rd 2014"
 
I confirmed with the seller that it does not include the original numbered wooden box or certificate of authenticity. For the serious collector that makes it NBG and reduces its value considerably. It's still a nice model with lights sound and smoke generator but it is just that now rather than a valuable collectors item IMO. Maybe that's a good thing?

If you actually want one to run and enjoy, rather than worrying about its "investment" value, then I'd say that could be a good thing if it allows you to haggle the price down! ;) I would say that one is probably not worth any more than £1500 without the original case, maybe less.

Just a note to anyone who does think about buying that particular one from Rails - ask them to ensure that the loco is VERY firmly packed inside the wooden case if it is being shipped, especially if it doesn't have its original polystyrene protection inside the case - they were the ones who posted me a rather nice scratchbuilt 5906 Mallet in a wooden carrying case - the case itself was well boxed for shipping, but the packing inside the case protecting the loco was totally inadequate and the loco arrived seriously damaged, having been bounced around inside the case by the not-so-tender mercies of ParcelFarce.... I hope they might have learned their lesson from that one, since they had to give me a very substantial refund (I repaired the loco in the end), but you just don't know.....

Agreed. I put an offer to them in that region but it got auto-rejected by eBay. We'll see what happens at the end of 25 days. :)

Interesting.... I didn't know that evilBay had an auto-rejection system, I just assumed that all offers got passed on to the seller for them to accept or decline.... maybe there is a % limit to avoid sellers being troubled by endless "silly" offers?

The seller can set a minimum offer level below which the offer is automatically rejected.

Exactly..
The original LGB mallet box has the cab well secured but not the buffer beams, or perhaps there were foam blocks missing in mine. It will shunt back and forth in the box during shipping until the cab gets completely bent.
Most people are absolutely clueless when it comes to packing heavy metal locomotives for shipping. A long heavy box will get dropped on it's end from carrying height many times. So pack precautionary with this in mind.
 
After being relisted 3 times and reducing the buy now price to £1,950 it finally went for £1,650.
