The Krauss Kasten Lok can be built out of a spare LGB Stainz loco chassis, using plastic card or brass sheet; plus the Stainz boiler and other fittings. Perhaps a winter project ? food for thought? Alyn

Re:Krauss Kasten Loks

Kastenloks were very common in the early days of trams.
The "Kasten" (Box) was made to give the engineer more room to move arround and take a look, and many Kastenloks had additional plates on lower front, end and sides to protect pedestrians and horses from beeing injured through the rods and steering.

In my hometown Reutlingen we had an old steam tram that was changed to electrics and was completely removed in the 60s or 70s.

I wonder about the pic with the many tubes on top of the engine. What is this for??? Cooling down the steam? Heating the ceiling?

Frank, That could be a condenser, recycling the exhaust steam, into a water tank?

Similar yes, but different builders. Werkspoor (Holland) and another UK builer, I think Peacock?

I have a film here of these trams taken in the 1970s. Very nice.

It was common practice on city tramways to have condenser tubes on the loco roof.
Also tram loco wheels and motion were fully enclosed to avoid frightening horses etc.
Don't know about steering though!

Re:Krauss Kasten Loks

Another feature of early steam trams (from the days when streets were unpaved) was to use a system where the cylinders were above the footplate and drove the coupling rods on the wheels by means of a rocker arm. Advantages were that mud from the road didn't get on the piston rod, and no cross-head guides were needed. An invention by Mr Brown in Switzerland and thus, I suspect, more common on the Continent. (later I think the factory became Brown-Boverei)

Re:Krauss Kasten Loks

What dictated the development of steam trams in the UK were the aforementioned requirements to hide the wheels and motion, plus they were not supposed to emit smoke or steam. They burnt coke (smokeless) and condensed the steam - hence the roof mounted condensing gear.

Hi Frank, all comments noted, I have a picture in my collection, of a loco used on a tramway but the boiler is heated from the overhead. The fire box on the Krauss engine was offset to the side see pic, also a couple of pics of a Krauss I built using a LGB Stainz as doner. Alyn

Great idea, but that seems very wasteful! Must have sounded like a giant kettle all the time, imagine if a fault occurred in the heater, the whole loco would become live!

Re:Krauss Kasten Loks

Regarding the steam loco with a pantograph - I read somewhere that the Swiss tried something like this during the Second World War, but had not seen anything about any other attempts. As the building in the background appears to be bombed out, I would guess the steam loco is being used on "Trummelbahn" (I think that is the correct word) construction/debris trains during WW2/post-war and may actually be a "normal" steam loco. The pantograph may only be fitted to operate the electric points on the tramway routes and not be used to heat it after all.
Some Southern Pacific diesels were fitted with trolley poles to operate signals etc on the Pacific Electric tram routes, so this might actually be something similar!

No doubt someone can correct me if I'm wrong...........!

Re:Krauss Kasten Loks

Further to the previous post, I am informed that it was BOGESTRA, the Bochum/Gelsenkirchen tramway operator who had a metre gauge steam loco fitted with a pantograph. It was used to tow tramcars around the system in the mid 1940's and the pantograph was used to operate the points and also to collect power to operate its electric headlight!

So now you know........

Very interesting stuff. I think, although I stand to be corrected, that the Italians did convert several small steam locos to electric during WW2.
