Infamous name rolling stock

Maybe he's been reading the recent thread on here saying how hard the NG stuff is to get at the moment.....? ;)

If it's rare, then it must be collectable and thus expensive!!

Jon.

Its just more of the same lunacy affecting all large scale BIN offerings on Ebay right now.

The percieved value is a different planet from what they're actual value is.

From experience the seller has no real interest in moving these, just trying to sell them off to a gullible someone not willing to do their homework on what they are buying.

These jokers are killing the market on Ebay.

Have you seen his other listings - looks like a 5 year old has weathered his tanker wagons...

Looks like he just squirted a can of grey primer at them! I suspect he was going for a "mist coat", but ****ed it up.....
The amazing thing is he then tries the "it's not a bug, it's a feature!" defence, by implying that as there is no "factory weathered" version available it makes them even MORE desirable...... &:

Jon

But does make people lots of money. I listed some of my brass signs (see thread in members offers section) for £2.50 each. Listed a good batch giving bidders the choice of which sign they wanted. Had one listing with no bids, and a couple that cleared £5 each... Great for me, but why are people wanting to pay over the odds...?

EBAY is a joke.
Disagree entirely. eBay is a useful source of stuff at very good prices as long as you do your research and you shop around exactly the same as you would anywhere else. Just ignore unrealistically priced or dodgy stuff.

Quite right, it's a buyers world, not the seller.

the world is a cruel place and ebay has too many .....'uninformed', or charlatans, both sellers and buyers
it seems there are certain sellers that indeed are 'predators', in the sense that if you dont research or know of any other resource, the prices then becomes, by default, acceptable if you want something, right away

this is not uncommon in anyway-in any field, cars, wine, women, horses etc

since ive just added to the herd (LGB that is) , and been watching ebay offering over here,
im simply floored by some of the asking prices, for very used or common items

i recently saw a starter lgb set, frieght, -you know crane, stainz and flat car, circa 1990 give or take, -asking $999 US!, anohter at $650.00-some folks have heard LGB is sought after and seem to have visions ...like the guy that has a common old lionel loco in beat condition thinking hes going to make antiques road show history

the harm however
is that , imho, other sellers, seeing these types get the wrong idea of actual value.

but as in real estate, if it sits long enough, eventually they get a clue

otoh, i have not only taken minor risks , and gotten screwed from time to time on ebay, gently, mind you, but also found some simply amazing deals
i guess it all works out

let me add, marklin's current pricing, or quality, isnt helping at all
for example
seeing the street price on a rail truck at about $300 US now makes those old ones at $175+ on ebay seem ....a deal.....

A question I often ask myself.... I wonder why people actually bid over the BIN price. I was bidding on a used enclosed Bachmann tram, bidding started at a sensible $20 and it ended up allegedly selling for $300.... Now that is about $150 over RRP.... Complained to eBay, nothing heard.... waited a month and exactly the same thing is back on same seller, notified eBay quoting all the details, seller and I agreed on $50 and its mine. Ebay contacted me and said that the seller had been banned for schill bidding so my gut feeling was spot on, he was bidding on his own lot under other names......
Nothing wrong with eBay but you have to have to be eBay smart, I'm going to sell "eBay smart" courses on eBay..... And I have discovered with my track gauges that people will buy anything, people even buy water in bottles....

trev-
i have often felt this was happening,
how might one spot this?
i have looked at the other bidders' historys and the like, and often the only thing i see is an odd amount of deals with the seller-but nothing concrete-just my guess

how do you identify a schill scam

A shill scam is usually spotted by early, irrational bidding. It takes the value of the object above what it is really worth (and as a bidder you should know the true value).
Normal bidding usually comes thick and fast at the end of the auction, not at the start.

i love to see, how much these are worth now.
just got ten of these boxes. they did cost me 23.- euro per box. including transport from holland via germany to southamerica.

Truly a shrewd investment Korm! It never ceases to amaze me (the prices) on ebay:rolf:

As Pugwash says look for irrational bidding and never ever bid above the BIN or RRP less postage. If the bidding goes over the BIN then report it to eBay. If there is no BIN then you have to do a bit of research and see what similar items are selling for....
I tend to use Auction Sniper if it's something that I really want http://www.auctionsniper.com/ < Link To http://www.auctionsniper.com and don't bid at all. Just give Auction Sniper my absolute maximum amount and let it do the rest. Seems to work for me.....

Ebay. The more you want something special, the longer it takes. I had been looking for this particular discontinued guitar for years. This where you have to know where to stop, there is no RRP or BIN price, just experience. Eventually and after a round trip of 600 miles last weekend it paid off, a lot of dross meantime, but worth it in the long run. Here she is.
