update-
i now need both sides!
these little piston things-im sure they are for the exhaust valve in teh steam chest (they are above the regular steam pistons and move in the opposite direction) are apparently quite delicate
and seemingly prone to breakage
i have handled my grey zillertall with great care and never touch the rods or valve assemblies!
I noticed that these things travel at a bit of an angle, ever so slight, into the piston hole, and combined with another rods movement which affects this angle -it seems the angle can become too great and the damnable things aim downward, and are pushed into the hole but cant move because of the angle, and then with the driver movement then get bent and then eventually break at the bend
thanks to one member whos trying to assist me, i might have two assemblies at some time soon-
in the mean time, as one of the things broke flush at the end of the little square portion, i tried a fix, with great success -so far.......
as there was nothing to be lost ......and nothing to glue or attempt a sleeve
and the idea of using a sleeve would require enlarging the hole in the cylinder-(and would act as a splint had the piston had something left protruding-alas not
i tried another approach
i used a dremel and drilled into the square portion where the original 'pin' piston was-, using an identical diameter piece of steel rod to the dirll as well as the oringal pin-
the fit at both ends was suitably tight, and i got between 1/8 and 1/4" drilled into the little block-enough, i hope, for some limited mechanical strength-
from talking with a very knowledgable experienced long time LGB US dealer and LGB fix it guy-dave at watts trains-this is apparently a flaw in the zillertalls, and a very common issue-
what a PITA since you really need the entire valve assembly due to the rivets
has anyone ever removed the rivets?-if so how please-as this would be the next step should i need to fashion an entire metal replacement pison part and attach it
