If someone could point me in the direction of a suitable speed controller (brushed or brushless???) and would I need a servo??

No, you won't need a servo, unless you want to physically push or pull something like a lever.

I've used one of http://www.electronize.co.uk/FR8T-SH_spec.htm < Link To these ESCs (Electronic Speed Controller), it plugs 'straight' into the receiver, batteries, and motor.
Some RC shops also stock ESCs that will handle 14.4 volts (12 cells) with inbuilt reverser. Current is not an issue with your loco.

You'll also need some bits to join the 2 batteries, switch it on and off, a fuse, and somewhere to plug in a battery charger.

A great piece of kit is made by G Scale Graphics (the only problem is that they are in the US - which means additional postal and import charges) I now have three of them..... N.B. I do not have any commercial links with the manufacturer.

The Enhanced unit has many functions in addition to speed & direction - see my YouTube short at the bottom for an idea of the speed and sound control.

This link is a review from Garden Railways.....

Costs and contact with the CEO (Del) is at.....

If you're willing and able to solder up a reversing switch and want the MINIMUM cost, have a look at the step-by-step description on my website:
http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/satr/2point4GHz.htm

You need only spend another $US15 +postage etc for a speed controller (ESC), servo and DPDT switch. You need a BRUSHED motor controller. Brushless don't work with our motors.
Any manufacturer's speed controller and servo will work.

If you don't want to do a bit of soldereing, glueing etc,, then the suggestions of RCS or Gscale Graphics by others are fine.

Too late do I reply. My recommendation would have been one of the units from this guy, he does very nice compatible sound systems too-

http://www.brianjones.free-online.c...raft.com/techinfo/revolution/OVGRS/index.html < Link To http://www.aristocraft.co...ution/OVGRS/index.html

I have one of these in a Railcar, not cheep but the quality of control makes me think seriously about doing away with all my Digital Stuff and going battery operation. No track Cleaning!

both ordered last Saturday. An electronize FR8T-SH (for future fitment) which arrived on Wednesday and Beltrol BTR-3r which arrived (from Australia!!) today. First to maplins (again:rolleyes: ) to get a fuse and charging socket

If you are "tripping out" to Maplins you might consider these : http://www.maplin.co.uk/auto-reset-circuit-breaker-493 < Link To Resettable Contact Breaker they seem a good idea, I have yet to try mine but they were recommended to me by someone who does a bit of converting.

Best of luck with the conversion work - I found it very fiddly but well worth the effort - I also modified the 'chuff' speaker fitted by Bachmann (larger and cardboard resonance tube.

Just for interest, did you get hit by import duty/VAT on the ex Oz parcel?

Regards

Rob

And of course you'll need to find a convenient source of miniature connectors.

I'd recommend the Aristo style JST connectors - but you just can't find them in the UK - or at least I can't.

Is this cross-posting?
